  • Do you mean the dental coverage (for dependents) that is administered by United Concordia? If you have a dentist you see, or would like to see, I would think you could call them and ask. I had dental work done recently, not my wisdom teeth (those came out 21 years ago!), and my dentist's office was able to provide a quote before the work was done.

  • Obviously it'll vary by location but I had to pay about $500 out of pocket, that was being put to sleep to do it. If your dentist refers you to an oral surgeon they'll do a consult and tell you how much it will cost before you schedule your appointment.

  • The price depends on your individual dentist. But I will let you know that United Concordia probably pays about 30% and we pay 70%

I had a consultation and they gave me a $500 estimate for the procedure. I had to pay that on the day of the procedure. A month later I got another bill for $275 that UC refused to pay.

It is really bull crap how much they don't cover.

I once paid $20 per filling then got a bill on top of it for an additional $200. I am thinking the next time I go to the dentist I am going to ask for dentures.

Yea the dental insurance isn't much. I have cavities to fill and I just don't want to shell out $80 bucks a piece.

  • You guys might want to call around and get quotes.

For my two fillings (back in the states) it only cost me $50ish (it was less than 60 though).

I had a wisdom tooth taken out in 2006 no sedation (i was pregnant) it only cost me $48.

I called back to the states to see how much it would cost to have the other one out (I only had the top two) and it was the same $48. I dont want sedation just numb me up and send me on my way.

  • Some of the base dental clinics will see dependents on a space available basis.  If you have a big military hospital near you, your chances are better to be seen.  I was going to get mine out at Naval Med. Center Portsmouth, but got a surprise BFP instead.

ETA: I needed my civilian dentist to write me a referral to the dental clinic at NMCP.

  • My wisdom teeth are impacted and need to come out ASAP.  The dentist referred me out to a civilian, but since we're near the Medical Center Bethesda, I contacted their maxillo-facial surgery department and asked if they see dependents for removal.  They asked for me to have my dentist fax in a referral and now I have an appointment tomorrow.  I'll post again with more information tomorrow!
