Northern California Babies

Disneyland with a 1 yr-old

I know this question has been asked in the past, but I haven't seen it lately.  We leave on Wednesday for three-days at Disneyland, with or almost 1-yr old (BD 5/21).

Those that have taken a child around this age, what rides were you able to go on with your LO, and what did you wish you knew then, that you know now.  We just had our friends (another family with a 1-yr old) back out of the trip last minute, so it will be just me, DH, and DD.

I know about the baby swap for the rides DD can't go on, but how difficult is this for one person to always be in line alone, and the other waiting with DD, before getting to ride all alone?

We orginally planned to be with the other family, which meant four adults, two 1-yr olds, and a 4-yr old, which would have made going on rides a bit easier, but we'll adapt.

Thanks so much for any words of wisdom you have for our upcoming trip!

  • i would all stand in line, and then when its time, parent going on the ride does, the other walks out to the exit. THat way you can do passing back in forth in line. i suggest just taking your time , doing things at kiddo pace. i swear that is the key to a successful vacation, no pressure, to be anywhere or go do anything.  not sure how busy it will be with spring breaks, but hope you guys have a great time.

  • Spring breaks should all be over, we'll be at the park May 5 - 7, so I'm not expecting super busy as kids are back in school.  Fingers crossed.

  • We just got back a few weeks ago. It was surprisingly easy. DS napped in the stroller (which he normally won't ). He was able to get on most rides and met almost all the major characters without being scared. He loved it. The waiting wasn't too bad, we kept him entertained pretty well. And while one person was on a ride we walked him around to see things he liked. He was always happy if we were walking.

  • We will be going when DS is about 9 months. They can go on most rides in Fantasy Land as well as Haunted Mansion, Pirates, Small World, etc. If you go on  to the Disney website all the rides that do not have a height requirement they can go on. We will be using the stroller pass for the other rides and we are brining DH sister along to help. I think it will be a lot of fun and I know our LO will love all the sights.

  • Don't forget about the shows!  I would go claim seats while DH would walk the girls around.  They definitely enjoyed the shows:)

Oh and our favorite place to eat at Disneyland is the Big Thunder BBQ.  Make reservations!  Spacious, reasonable, all you can eat, no fighting for a table!  Fantastic!

  • Thanks everyone for the advice, it's putting me a bit more at ease about the trip, and any obstacles we might face!

  • I'm late chiming in but just also keep your expectations low. I went in all gung-ho that my kids would love all the rides and characters...it couldn't have backfired more. Our 2nd trip was much nicer, we let them lead the way and while we didn't do near as much as I would've liked or had planned for, it was perfect. They were happy & loved every minute! :)
