was this a weird question?

I finally told my boss I was expecting.  I haven't worked with him long and the co. is in freak-out mode, so I was nervous.  He was very nice and congratulatory and was asking the general questions but one that kind of rang funny was, "Was it planned?"  To which I responded yes.

I don't think he meant anything by it but I kind of wonder if he was thinking, "denise, we're swamped, how could you get pg now?"  aah, it was just a simple question, right?

I think that is the RUDEST question. I got asked that a lot, when I got pregnant with Emi only a few months after returning to work from my mat leave with Gina.

  • It's a weird an innapropriate question, but one that I just think people think of and don't filter out.

I doubt he meant anything of it.  Don't worry :)

What kind of work do you do?

  • Yeah kind of weird.  Not a question you would expect anyone to ask, especially your boss.

I've been asked that question before by a co-worker & coming from her I didn't think too much about it.  I think most people who ask that question don't have kids themselves & don't realize how inappropriate it is.
  • We're Catholic and when our priest at chruch first noticed I was showing before church one day, he came up to congratulate us and then asked if it was planned..I was floored, expecially since we had been married over 2 years, PLUS in our marriage class there was a couple getting married that was 9 months pregnant and couldnt even finish the classes before they had the baby
  • I kind of always wonder if pregnancies are planned but rarely ask the question. I think b/c he is a male, he is probably less in tune with the fact that it probably isn't the nicest thing to ask.

Could he really think that you would put your family planning on hold for the sake of the company? Who am I kidding? He's a man!!

  • I don't get how someone would even think to ask this question to someone that is married?  So strange.  I was never asked that with DS but I know that many people have been asked that from when I was over on BOTB.

  • Definitely a weird question and considering the situation, I'd probably read into it too! But, I'm sure he didn't mean anything by it. He may have just sensed your hesitancy to tell him and wondered if it was because you were shocked by the news as well.

I'm glad it's over with now!
