Help me break a bad habit

LO has been STTN since 5 weeks, and I was adament about not going into his room too quickly when he fussed (he only fussed twice that I remember anyway).  I made that mistake with my 1st and he woke up every 1.5 hours to nurse until we did CIO.  Anyway, DS #2 was sick with a stuffy nose starting 2 nights ago and he woke up every hour because he couldn't breathe.  Now he's better but now he'swaking up every hour or so for his paci and a little rocking. He's back to sleep in minutes, but I still have to get up every hour, so I have been barely sleeping.  I noticed last night I am going in too fast, but I'm pretty sure if I start waiting he will just fuss and evetually start screaming.  Best part? I start work tomorrow, awesome timing.  Any advice to break this new habit without CIO since he is too young?

  • Yes: Go in and attend your poor sick baby. When you're sick, you want help. He NEEDS it. He may not be super sick, but he's sick enough for it to disturb his sleep. Sucks you have to start work tomorrow, but you need to attend to your sick child and there's no two ways about it. When he gets better, he'll go back to his normal sleeping patterns, but for now he's sick and he needs you. Have you tried infant tylenol for him to help him feel a little better?

  • Yep, I've given him Tylenol the last 2 nights.  He is pretty much fine all day, although today he is just a little crabbier than usual, not necessarily fussy.  I think I thought he was feeling better than he is and that I was starting an awful habit like I did with DS #1 (it was seriously awful, he woke up every 1.5 hours for 2-3 months). Hopefully he will go back to sleeping well when he feels better.   Thanks!

Would it help to have him in your room for a few nights?  It would be easier for you to get to him before he wakes up completely and it might help him feel better being close to his mom.  Idk, that's just what I would do.  You can always move him back to the crib before morning so he wakes up there and can start the day in his usual routine.

  • I agree with PP.  He's probably still sick feeling and needs you!  It stinks that you're headed back to work right now, I'm sorry about the timing!  boo!
  • Make sure you are using the humidifier.  For some reason they seem to stop STTN when you go back to work.  It sucks but happens to all the other moms at work so people will understand.
