What CDs?? I have never washed/dried 4 times to prep a CD.
Any CD or insert with natural fibers like hemp, organic cotton or bamboo needs to be washed 3-4 times to remove the oils of the fabric. Anything synthetic like microfiber or PUL only needs to be washed once before using.
To the OP, I've never really gotten a straight answer on this one. I usually wash and dry.

I knew about inserts (I usually boil mine) I just have never had to prep a CD that many times. Good to know.

I throw them in with the load I am washing and leave them in the washer when I transfer loads- so wash twice and dry once. DD gets checked about hourly unless she starts fussing earlier to have her diaper changed, so this works well for us for daytime use. They require more washes to be fully absorbant for a heavier wetter night time use.
