If I didn't love beer so much...

...it would be a lot easier to hide this pregnancy!  We have so many things coming up where I will have to make up some excuse for not drinking beer (cookouts, graduation parties, my birthday party).  Some people could just shrug it off, but, I rarely turn down a beer, so it will certainly send up some red flags.

We have a cookout tonight and DH said I should just say I am hungover, because that would be more believable than saying I just don't want a beer.  Gee, thanks DH Smile

  • I know how you feel!  I've had to fake drink a couple times already. lol

You could always accept the beer and then first chance you get go to the bathroom, dump it in the sink and fill it back up with water. It's what I've seen a few bumpies suggest.

  • I completely understand!  My sister helped me fake drink wine at our family's Easter dinner.  We both got a glass and when no one was looking we'd very discretely trade until eventually she'd finished both glasses.  It worked well!  And of course, my sister really like the arrangement because she got to have a bit more wine without the usual disapproving looks. Wink

Maybe you and your DH could pull of a similar scheme next time?

  • Me too!!! Not beer though, wine and all kinds of other drinks lol. We have quite a few events coming up where i will have to fake it lol Thankfully im still going to try the medication excuse! GL and Congrats!

  • I hear ya!  I told DH, man, if only I wasn't so reliable at being people's drinking buddies before, it'd be easier to hide!
  • Can I suggest a few ideas?

    1. If you are in charge of making your own drinks, etc...Mocktails. Vodka Twist can instead be a clear soda and a twist of lime. No one will have to know. Anything with fruity juices and mixed drinks can be made virgin on the sly.

    2. If you are going out and you are in a social situation, talk to the bartender. Working in a bar before, I know that if you can pull your waitress or your bartender aside and explain, they will help you out. Also, if someone orders a drink for you, you can ask the staff to do a bait and switch on your drink for a mocktail also.

    3. The beer bottle trick the PPs have said are also known to work.

    4. I had to turn down wine yesterday and blamed it on an upset stomach and said that I doubt wine would help.

  • We just had friends over for a bbq tonight. I filled an empty bottle of vodka with water and kept making myself vodka & lemonades! Worked like a charm.

  • My husband and I were just talking about this! We have a big family reunion in Texas early June. It's my husband's family and they are a wild and crazy bunch (in a good way). We were talking about how hard it's going to be down there with not drinking and sort of hiding it from them. I'm also not one to turn down a beer.  It's going to be a challenge, but between my husband and I we're hoping we'll be able to pull off fake drinking.

When we were ttc I laid off drinking a lot, and it always frustrated me that just because a woman isn't drinking people automatically were like "why, are you pregnant?".  We're fairly private and didn't want to tell anyone we were ttc and we don't want to spill the beans that we're pregnant for a while either.

  • Hey ladies!

Thanks for all the responses.  Tonight went pretty well.  I slipped and told the hostess, which was good because she was planning to do a champagne toast to me finishing law school, so she used paper cups and just handed me an empty one!  I didn't really want to tell her this early, but I did get a full maternity wardrobe out of it!  We are similar size and she buys all name brand stuff.  She offered me everything.

For our future events, I may try some of the above suggestions.
