Too many newborn and 0-3 month clothes

I had just the right amount of clothes for newborn/0-3 months until today.  My coworkers...god bless them, they are so sweet -- hosted a luncheon/shower for me today.  I received like 7-8 of those layette sets (hat, socks, bib, onesie, pants, and sleeper), like 20 more pairs of socks.  I think I have way too much stuff now and am not sure my baby will get to wear all of them.

I don't have reciepts, but most of them are Carters with the tag on, one is from Target, and 2 are from Macys.  I hate to do it, but I think I will try to return and get store credit to buy diapers, wipes, and nursing gear.

What would you guys do?

  • People always love to buy the tiny clothes.
This happened to me with my first baby so I anticipated the same would happen with this one.  Sure enough, tons of tiny clothes.
    I'd return what you can

  • I wouldn't feel bad about returning some of the items for some other things that are more necessary! People do have tons of fun buying baby clothes - but if you have more than you can use, it's silly to keep them. I'm sure the gifters would agree that they'd love you to have something you can use!

  • I had the opposite problem. I got 1 13lb sleeper and 1 NB onesie at my last shower. I got a closet full of 3-6 and 6-9 month sleepers, onesies and clothes.  I had to go buy 3 little 10lb sleepers just so I felt 'safe' if baby came.

My MIL was asking what we still needed because we're having a shower for her side of the family. I told her we had like no little clothes (NB and 0-3) and she came back later and told me she had told her friends/family that we needed little clothes, but not too little, like 3-6 month. She keeps saying NB and 0-3 are a waste and he'll only be in them for a couple weeks. My brother and his wife had an 8lb boy and he was in NB for a full month and would have been even longer except for his cloth diapers that have put him into the 0-3.

  • I got hit with what they call "first baby and it's a girl" syndrome... I must have 60 onesies now.

At this point, I washed enough for 2 weeks of clothing. The rest has the tags on it... if we get to the point where I want to wash/use them great... otherwise they're going to the used baby clothes store as consignment credit for when she gets bigger. People actually bought me Christmas outfits... seriously?!!

We also got boxes of diapers and stuff because we already bought everything we needed for the baby.

  • If it is your first, remember babies go through A TON of clothes. My kid was in 3 changes a day for the first month or so (and he was a peanut so I only had preemie clothes/swimming in NB clothes). However, I wouldn't return them for gear and stuff, I would trade them in for larger sizes of the same or similar outfits, esp. if you don't have a receipt.

  • Definitely return what you can, especially if it's just generic pjs/onsies-type stuff.  I would keep any special outfits though because people might ask about seeing LO in them.  If there is other stuff that you can't return, maybe you can keep it to give as gifts to other friends/family that are have babies in the future?  I have a few things that I can't return that I'm planning on doing that with.

  • Hmmm, lot's of ideas here.  I think I might try to return as much as I can and what can't be returned I'll just keep.  Thanks.

mcwhittaker where were you when I was having a nervous breakdown over baby clothes in Target yesterday. I was seriously looking at baby clothes (Newborn and 3 mo's) trying to figure out how I was going to wash them to get ready for baby AND keep the tag on. I'm already not thinking clearly!

OP - I have the opposite problem a bunch of 3-6 and 9+ outfits but maybe 2 onesies for 0-3 months and not one "newborn" outfit. I wish I could send you my 3-6 and 6+ outfits in exchange for the newborn ones, but I'm having a boy. :(

  • if they are carters just return them to BRU they will take them back and give you full credit, which is nice.

I would keep them due to you do not know how big your little one will be and you may need them. I only returned duplicates.

you will be surprised at how many onsies and outfits you are going to want and need.

if anything keep them for a bit till the baby is here and then you can better gauge whether you need them or not. also if you know someone that is having a baby you can always regift them to a new mom who will surely be happy to have them esp a second time mom that might not be getting a shower.

  • We got a TON of nb and 0-3 sized onsies and outfits from Carters at 1 of my out of town showers, simply because Carters is the only baby store in town. I took the duplicates back to Carters and ended up with over $100 in store credit. I'll be using that this fall to buy fall/winter clothes. Didn't wanna buy that stuff now cause I'm not sure how big he'll be. I'm thinking if I shop black friday with $100, I can get a butt load of clothes to last him fall, winter, and spring.

  • I returned all the clothes I had no intention of ever putting her in.  I then kept the money on store credit and will buy her stuff as we need it.  If I need more nb size stuff? I shall send my mother with the card to the store and buy it then.  In colors/styles that we need.  Not tacky, yucky, crap.

  • good to know that BRU will take Carter's stuff back for store credit.  I'm on maternity leave now, so I'm spending next week organizing and finishing buying stuff off the registry
