Since I only get unpaid leave and am saving as much vacation time as possible for after the birth, I will be working until my water breaks, hopefully.

  • My last day of work is July 15th and my due date is Aug 5th. I have some vacation time built up and since I have a year maternity leave and 9 months paid I want to take some down time before the baby comes.

I get paid disability pay whenever my doctor writes me out (most likely/normally/expected at 36 weeks), and it doesn't affect the paid (and unpaid) time I qualify for after birth, so I will haaaaaaapily stop working at 36 weeks. I'm counting the days!!

That's awesome!  How does your doctor write you out of work assuming your pregnancy is normal and healthy?  I'm not at all trying to be snarky.  I obviously don't know what your profession is or your medical history.  Just curious.  Smile

In CA, State Disability allows you to leave work (paid) up to 4 weeks before your scheduled due date.  It's use it or lose it.  It's just a state benefit I'm entitled to and basically will just have to ask for.  I've never heard of a doctor not giving it, though I will have to remind her and ask her to sign the paperwork.  It's not my full pay, but about 60% (state disability pay).  I don't have to take it, but since it's use it or lose it, and a benefit available to me and won't affect my FMLA (which starts after baby is born), I fully plan to take it.  I also commute about 40 mins to work, so I think I'll be pretty over that by that time.  And also, we've been so slow at my job that they're kind of encouraging me to go off and start getting paid by the state (and not by them) as soon as I can.

  • I'm a teacher, so my last day of work will be June 15th! I couldn't be more excited Big Smile I thought that I would have wanted to deliver in May, so I could take off for the summer without worrying about losing income, but honestly I can't imagine working in my school 35 weeks pregnant.

This is shameful, but there are NO adult sized toilets in our school, and the only ones we're able to use are tiny stalls in the corners of people's offices. Like.. the kindergarten sized toilet is in a corner. Seriously. I'm having a hard time fitting my ass on it now, I don't think my stomach would fit in there at 8 months. For the record, our school is soooo not up to code. and they know it. we're just broke and can't fix anything! haha

I do get to to take off until January though- unpaid, but I'll take it!

As of right now I will work until i go into labor, Maybe or maybe take a week to get things ready all depending on when baby wants to join us! But, after baby is born I will get 6 weeks paid leave for recovery and then another 6 weeks for bonding, and I will supplement that with my long term sick leave. But I'm not planning on taking off much time before baby comes!

Hey there, I'm doing almost the same as you and using the partially paid Disability and PFL for the 12 weeks.

Also, not sure if you know this already - I just found out that in CA we also get disability up to 4 weeks before the birth. I might stop working a week or so beforehand, depending on how I feel at that point.

This isn't necessarily true...  With the CFRA (CA Family Rights Act) and FMLA, your employer can make you to take them both simultaneously.  FMLA does not begin with the birth of a child, it begins when you leave to prepare for the birth of a child.  I work in HR and support employees in our CA offices, and although they do get the additional 4 weeks paid for CFRA, it runs concurrently with their 12-week FMLA leave.

Here is where we direct employees to: https://www.edd.ca.gov/disability/FAQs_for_Employers.htm

I would double-check with your employer.  Good Luck!

Thanks, I've got it all worked out :)  You're right that FMLA will run out, but my CFRA does not run concurrently with my PDL.  So, I will go out at 36 weeks for PDL and be paid from then until 6 weeks post-baby by PDL.  I will then start my 12 weeks of CFRA.  FMLA will run out when baby is around 8 weeks old, but CFRA will not start until my PDL ends - so I have about 18 weeks post-baby of job protection.  I'll go out at 36 weeks (end of July), and return to work Jan 1 - all job protected leave.

  • Great question!

I'm due the 20th and have taken off effective the 12th.

I'll be off on paid mat leave (through Canada Federal Employment Insurance) for 1 year and feel horrible for saying that after I see all the moms having to go back in so little time, and with no pay.  We really do have it lucky but I think its a crock that you all don't have the same oppurtunity.

However I was told yeasterday buy a lady at work that I am much farther along than 6 months.  She said I was much to big to be only 6 months I have to be closer to 8 so in her eyes I will be due in June.  hehe

Sounds like someone needs a throat punch.

  • I'm a teacher, so I'm, off at the end of June... But if it was during the year, I'd just work until my due date, I guess.  :)

  • I get out of school when I'm about 30 weeks or so (May 26) which is great, because I don't think my doc would have let me work much longer than that anyway.  I am going to take an online grad class this summer, which starts at the beginning of June.  I figured if I'm at home with the possibility of bed rest, I might as well continue working on my Masters.
