I have a couple of friends who are having little ones soon and have young toddlers already. I'm guessing that they have mostly everything they need so I'm wondering what you would've liked as a gift for baby #2?
We really had more than what was needed for DD by the time she was born. Some friends gave us a TON of hand-me-down clothes and we decorated the nursery with things bought by us mostly online. It seemed like the only things we needed that people could buy for us were consumables.
- To be honest the best things I got for DD were gift cards. It seemed like there weren't a whole lot of things we NEEDED for her, but there were things we wanted for her (clothes, toys, accessories). Also, I used one gift card to buy a digital photo frame specifically for DD's photos. We had one full of DS's pics already and I wanted another; so while it wasn't a "baby" item, it was something that I wanted to have for/because of DD.
- Another idea is to pick something special that is specifically for that baby, maybe?...like a long-term gift maybe, since most of that baby's stuff will be hand-me-downs (especially if they are the same sex). I guess I'm thinking about things that might hold a special place in the child's life as they grow up; quilts, photo/scrap books, artwork, handmade items, etc.
If this question is about a gift for mom, make a certificate for your services (come over and cook, come over and watch kids so she can work around the house, offer to fold laundry); or provide mom with some "me time" with a spa/massage gift; or a certificate for maid service.
My favorite gift I got was a friend of mine came over with nothing and said, "I know you already have everything, so I am getting you a night out once Nolan is a little older." Then when he was 6 weeks old we went out to a movie (at the Lux level, do you have that near you? We were able to eat and have a couple of drinks while watching the movie) and I was home within a couple of hours. It was great to get out!!!!
Other than that, I really liked gift cards since I did pretty much have everything already.
Food delivered to the house after bringing the baby home.
A gift card for photography.
Those were my 2 most helpful gifts.
And... you're kind to ask!
Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
We actually have a fairly long list of "needs" for baby #2. We are furnishing another nursery since DD#1 is still in a crib and still wears diapers, so there are a lot things that we can't reuse since DD#1 is still using them! We also need more newborn clothes since baby #2 will be born in a different season.
That said, I wouldn't tell friends that we need these things, since we plan to buy them ourselves. I agree that a gift card would be the most useful so that they can buy these things themselves (or if you want something to wrap up--season appropriate newborn clothes or diapers are always appreciated).
gift cards are good, bringing dinner after the baby comes, I like the idea of a night out that the PP had. If the kids are different sexes, maybe some basics that they only have in blue or pink...but they will probably get most of that stuff from other people.
