**Fricks**

I didn't want to hi-jack love's post, but did you do the extinction method with either A or S? T is not sleeping well during the day or at night, we have done the Ferber progressive thing since Saturday and there has really been no improvement. We tired the HSHHC timing/schedule stuff several times and it just doesn't work for him. I just need to find something that works!!

Re: **Fricks**

  • Yep, total extinction with both of them.  Alex we did at 9 months and it took 2 days, the kid is 4, he still naps and he sleeps 11-13 hours a night.

Simon we started around the same time and he never really has had to cry, it wasn't like a 2-3 day process of sleep training (more I think bc we did it from the beginning- not CIO of course but reading his cues so we helped him be a better sleeper from the get- with Alex we were at the point of exhaustion, we never really got there this time- lucky us!).

We did total extinction as outlined in HSSHC. (My Bible- and yours too I know!)

Now, I change Simon before I go to bed between 11 and midnight bc he's a heavy wetter (tmi!) and if I don't he'll wake with soaked sheets.  When I change him I snuggle him for a few minutes to get him calm but other than that he is in his crib from 7-7 without us going in, even if he cries.  He's never really cried more than 10 minutes.  I'm afraid b/c he's such an easy baby, he's going to be a helluva teenager...  Surprise

I know that each kid is different and people have to do what is comfortable for them.  But this works, it worked for both my kids and they are night and day different.

Headed to work now but if you have more ?s I'll answer tonight!  GL!

Another extinction fan. It worked wonders for us.

  • Ok, couple extinction questions...

Did either of you try the progressive approach first (and have it not work)?

Any of the kids seem dependent on the pacififer when you did the extinction? T will go back to sleep if I go in and pop the pacifier in his mouth. Which I am not happy about, I want him to self soothe...

  • Yes we did try that first (for maybe 2 weeks?). Us going into the room, no matter how long (5 min, 7, min, 12 min etc) always made it worse.. sometimese even resetting the clock of how long she would cry. If you can think about it like this: We knew that DD was going to cry for 30-40 minutes no matter if we held her the entire time, or if we went in on intervals, swaddled, unswaddled, rocking, swinging, in her crib, paci etc.

Once we decided to try the extinction method, slowly over 2 days, without us in the room - no paci, no swaddle but with white noise blaring and a lovey) the crying  reduced from 45 minutes down to about 4-8 minutes. By day 3 if she needed to cry it was less than 2 minutes and she was out. But most times if we timed it right, she didn't need to cry at all.

A couple of things I wanted to note:

    - we treated naps and bedtime the same

    - A fair warning - I didn't sleep much over this 3 day period.

Okay, that's very reassuring because T is the same way in terms of resetting the clock. Thank you!

  • Way late but I'll answer cause the binky thing was hard for us.

Alex LOVED his binky and we got sick of sticking it in his mouth (beofre the 9 month mark we were going in to pop it in all the time, similar to you).  So, we had the genius idea to just put like, 8-10 binkies in his crib so he can find one even in the dark and crying.  Which worked.  However, he then developed the habit of sleeping with one in his mouth and one in each hand, so now he had to have three binkies to sleep.  But he did sleep, so to me, no biggie.  Getting rid of it was less of a nightmare than I imagined as well, we did it at 2 yo.

Simon is much less attached to his binky.  He can self-soothe and only has one in there.  I don't know why- just different styles of kiddo.  Simon likes to hold hair (my hair or DH's goatee) when he goes to sleep so in his crib he holds a blankie,  I think he's going to be a blankie kid, which Alex never was.

Let em know what you do and how T does!  Good luck!
