We went to Sams club and got stuff for cold sandwiches (turkey, ham, salami) and different kinds of cheese (white american, cheddar, pepperjack) and had a veggie tray, chips and dip, some cold salads (potato salad, shredded chicken with small noodles), apples with caramel dip. Then we had cupcakes and a cake for the LO.
We don't do anything fancy for birthday parties in our family. We just did pizza with snacks (veggie tray, fruit tray, and some chips/pretzels, etc.). We then had cupcakes for dessert.
I had it catered- I don't cook for parties, too much hassle. But we did kids finger foods- chicken fingers and fries, and grilled cheese sandwichs with different gourmet cheeses and tomato soup. We also had a big salad, cheese and crackers, and a veggie tray.
Our Journey from two to three!

24 burger patties = 16 bucks at Costco. 24 buns = 2.99 at Costco.
We provided the meat and asked that people don't bring gifts but to help out with sides. Not normally my style but I have to say it was such an AWESOME party. People stayed past 9pm, drinking sangria and grazing on leftovers.
Easy stuff like sandwiches, pizza, or just snacks/appetizer style would be good too. We had a mid-afternoon party, so I served fruit, veggies, popcorn, mexican tortilla wraps, and cake/cupcakes.
Our first baby girl, Lucia Joy, joined us on April 1, 2010!
Well ours was in winter. We did a chili bar. We had white chicken chili, mexican chili and regular chili. Then had fritos cheese crackers hot sauce yada yada to put in the chili. I also had pizza squares, a hot cocoa bar, cake pops and cookies.

There were only adults at DD's first birthday party, but the two things that everyone seemed to love were:
Ham and cheese sliders - https://annies-eats.net/2010/07/13/ham-and-cheese-sliders/
Fruit kabobs with chocolate covered strawberries on the end
