CP:I feel like we're naming her Rover... (Baby Name Help!)

I'm a lurker here on the bump but I need some outside opinions on baby names. DH and I would like to keep the name to ourselves, just something special between the two of us, until baby girl is born. So I'm asking internet strangers for their opinion instead of consulting friends and family.

Middle name is going to be Jayne. It's my middle name, my mother's middle name and my maternal grandmother's first name. So we want to continue that tradition.

DH has always like the name "Sadie". Sadie Jayne Lastname sounds really good together. It fits our criteira of family middle name with non-family first name, not overly common or trendy but also not hard to spell or say.

So what's the problem...

We know FIVE dogs named Sadie. DH's department head, the field trailer dog on my work site, my waxer's dog, our lab's buddy at the dog park, and one of the great dane's owned by a friend who runs a three dog bakery.

Everytime we get over the amount of dogs that are named Sadie, we meet another one... leading DH to comment "I feel like we're naming her Rover!" And we don't have a very good contender in second place.

So what do you think? Get over it and go with the name we like? Or are we setting her up for endless playground mockery for having such an apparently common dog's name?

Any name suggestions to go with Jayne are more than welcome!

  • My parents family dog was named Sadie, and I've never met a human Sadie.

I don't think it sounds bad, but I do think that so many dogs are named Sadie that your LO might get called a dog and be teased.

  • My cousins had a dog named Sadie and I also knew a horse with that name, no people though.  Sadie Jayne is cute for a kid, but it doesn't strike me as a name that fits an adult.

  • I know 3 dogs named Sadie. The only non-dog I know is an ex-stripper (nope not kidding, married a friend of MHs). So I am not a huge fan of the name.

  • There aren't a lot of names that can't be teased about on the playground.  Kids are mean, and they're clever.  But Sadie is a pretty name.  I've heard it for a dog before, but I've also heard names like Mary, Allison, and Katie for a dog.

I say if you guys like the name stick to it.  But maybe this is just a way of discovering you're not totally sold on it.  Keep looking, in case you find something you like better.  But when you meet her, you may just see a little Sadie Jayne... Or you may not!

  • I love the name Sadie. We have friends with 3 kids and their names are Sadie, Sloane and Sawyer! Love them all!!!

  • I've never met a human or canine named Sadie, so it sounds like a good name. However, I don't know how well the name will "grow". I don't see a "Sadie" for a CEO. Cute for a little girl, not so much CEO material.

  • I honestly don't think you're setting her up for playground mockery. (I have a friend who goes by Buddy (nn) and although it was super odd to me at first, especially since I had a dog named Buddy, I got over it.) But, to me, Sadie is a dog's name. I know more than one dog named Sadie.

  • I think Sadie is adorable.  Both of the names we chose before we knew that our little guy was in fact a guy happen to also be the names of our friend's dogs.  Our son will be named Elliott, and my admin assistant at work has a dog named Elliott, and our girl name was Molly, which is the name of my friend's Boston Terrier.  More and more people name their pets human names, so it's hard to avoid.
  • Sadie is a VERY common dog name. I wouldn't do it. It sounds very nice together with Jayne, however, most people in the US don't go by their first AND middle name. When her teacher call roll in class, she will only say "Sadie" or "Sadie _(last name)__" She will be teased. Most middle names don't appear on paper, it's usually just the initial.

I think you're probably right. I'm just not sold on it. I guess we'll keep looking! And I do think I'll need to meet her before I can be totally sure!

I see your point about it sounding like a little girl but at the end of the day, I think her work ethic and intelligence will be a better indicator of her ability to become a CEO!
