Breastfeeding

When do you plan to start introducing solids?

Just out of curiosity... I've heard six months is the time to start as baby needs to use those muscles and it helps with speech development. My LO is just under 5 months and is reaching for our food and drinks. She is breastfed only right now.

When do you plan on starting solids? Rice?

Re: When do you plan to start introducing solids?

  • 6 months!

DS reaches for food, drinks, my hair, earrings, toys, light switches, pictures, whatever he can grab. I do not think this is an indication that he is ready to eat/drink/wear earrings/turn on lights/etc.

  • Ha! Good Point! Thanks :)
  • 6mos.  Which is now.  I can't believe its time already!  And DD also reaches for everything and it all goes in her mouth if she can manage.  No rice cereal here.  We plan to use BLW.  We just think its a better fit for our family.  To each their own on how to start solids but most resources agree that 6mos is the right time.  The pedi did want us to start rice cereal around 4mos so we "wouldn't miss the window for her to learn to eat from a spoon."  No joke.  It took everything I had not to laugh at her.  Our practice has three pedis and we'll be seeing someone else for her 6mos check up.  We'll see how it goes when she brings up solids.

Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!

  • We started rice cereal about a month ago, when DS was 15 weeks. He eats like a champ, and we have been given the green light to introduce "yellow" veggies. He stares at us while we eat with his mouth wide open and the other night DH had DS in his lap, and a whoopie pie on the arm of the couch and DS was fighting as hard as he could to get dad to let go of him so he could go for it.

  • dd#1 was at 6 months, exactly. dd#2 was at 5.5months - two weeks earlier than planned but she was ready and is sort of enjoying some of it!
  • Per direction of our pedi, we started after 4 months.  We started with purees and she did great with them.  She was showing a lot of interest.  I don't think 6 months is a "magical" number.  Just as all babies walk, talk, crawl, etc. at different ages, some are ready for food before others.  We skipped rice cereal and oatmeal with no problems.  We are taking more of a BLW approach right now as she isn't showing interest in purees unless she can spoon feed herself (which is a big mess).

  • We started at 5.5 months. I was planning to wait until 6 months, but LO was clearly interested in eating, so I started 2 weeks early.

  • We started rice cereal at 4.5 months, then fruits and veggies at 5months.  It sounds like your LO is ready.

  • Planning on 6 months, but I am going to watch for signs that he's interested in what we're eating. I'm in no hurry because DS has terrible tummy aches a couple times a week, and he's EBF. I'm terrified how he's going to handle solids!

  • we waited until 6 mo, then we started with avocado.

There is really no reason to start any earlier than that IMO but ultimately it is up for you.

My DD would reach as well but that is common.
