DH and I are still all over the place when it comes to boy names. The other night the name "Holden" popped in my head and I liked the sound of it...however, does it make anyone think of Catcher in the Rye?
I do like this name and have thought of it for myself as well....our last name begins with an "H". For me it makes me think of a soap opera I used to watch....Young and the Restless, I think. Good luck!
There is a boy at the school where I used to teach...I think he's in the first or second grade now. His name is Holden, and it's a good name.

I like it. It doesn't make me think of Catcher in the Rye. It actually makes me think of Army Wives (there's a family with the last name Holden on that show).
I like the name as long as it goes well with the rest of the name.. I had a friend named Holden Awong. He gets teased for that quite a bit.. So as long as the rest of his name doesn't say what he might be holding, I like the name
Ash -- Married to my wonderful soldier, expecting our first in November
Yes, it does make me think of Catcher in the Rye. It's becoming quite a popular name.
Unfortunately that's the curse of names I like...when I was in high school I swore I would name my child Jordan, in college it was Aidan, 3 years ago it was Liam...I'm a walking prediction of the most popular name 5 years from now.
I think Holden is adorable! It didn't make me think of Catcher in the Rye, but I did think of William Holden(who was very handsome). I think it's a great name!
Nope, doesn't make me think of that, its a nice name. Holden makes me think of the husband on Army Wives (General Holden)ha ha... Also remember that if its a boy and thats his name, children his age prob wont even know what Catcher in the Eye even is....I remember when I worked as a substitute in a high school freshmen didnt know who Vanilla Ice was. I'm not even old and I felt old...

Except that Catcher in the Rye is often required reading in HS, and Vanilla Ice is not likely to be part of any curriculum. But like I said before, I don't think it's a bad association.
If I were going for a literary name, I'm not sure I'd name a child after Holden Caulfield, which is precisely what I think of. I actually like the name, but the immediate reference to that character would rule it out for me.
On a side note, I have a friend that just had a baby in January, and they named their son Holden. Their last name is "Eddie". So he will be teased mercilessly with kids saying he's "holdin' Eddie!" God forbid there is a kid named "Eddie" in his class...they'll both be down for the count. I feel sorry for him.

My first thought was "I wonder if their last name is Caulfield"
However, I dont think many people read Catcher in the Rye anymore so I dont think too many people would associate it with the book (it just happens to be my favorite )

Thats true, BUT sadly many adults today have no idea what Catcher in the Rye is and who knows what they will be requiring in a curriculum when our children are in school 13-15 years from now.
I *love* the name Holden.. (one of my favorite books is The Catcher in the Rye tho!) howeverrrr, my husband of course had to bring up the not so nice nickname of "hold-en my... *insert whatever here*" which kind of ruined it for me We keep doing that for every baby name we think of, we analyze it like crazy. We loved the name Avery (girl) but our last name is Perry, so I didn't want people to pronounce her name A - Very Perry. I know I over think things!

Re: Holden for boy name
I didn't think of Catcher in the Rye instead it made me think of The Gambler....You gotta know when to Holden, know when to fold 'em......
Sorry, that was the first thing that popped into my mind. Really though, I think it's a cute name!
