Baby Names

Bella

Thoughts?! We are still making a list of favorites but Bella is at the top. I just don't know what MN to put with it. Our last name sounds like "Sweetman". My 2 girls are Reese Addison and Emma Grace. I like the old-fashioned names.

So far I've thought of:

Bella Kate

Bella Sue (Sue is my MN and yes this sounds southern but I live in TX!)

Other names on our list: Scarlett, Lillian, Georgia/Gwen (but DH isn't on board)

Re: Bella

  • Twilight ruined it for me

  • lol, i'm not even a twilight fan and I know DH hasn't seen it!!
  • I have to agree that despite it being a beautiful name, it is ruined for the next several years due to Twilight. Isabelle and Isabella = the same.

  • I like ALL of your other choices though.
  • I am not a fan of Bella (thanks to Twilight) but I love the name Georgia! My DH vetoed that one Sad.

  • While Twilight is ridiculously popular, I still love the name Bella. I think it's just beautiful. From your list, I also really like Scarlett.
  • I like Lillian the best, then Georgia. Bella Kate sounds nice, but I think Bella is pretty trendy right now. I love Isabel though.

  • I don't care for Bella on its own. To me it's a NN for Isabel or Isabella. That being said the one Isabella/Bella I know has the MN Rae.
  • Bella is a old fashioned name, but be aware that because of Twilight it is extremely popular right now.  I have a child care center and have had 3 Bella's since the movie came out.  Good luck!

  • I know 13 girls named Bella......and 17 dogs named Bella.

I have come to hate the name Bella. And for some reason I cannot picture a woman in her 30's with a "cutesy" name like Bella

  • I think that unless you regularly fraternize with 14-year-old girls, you really shouldn't be bothered by a flash-in-the-pan teen reference.

Bella is a gorgeous name, and I think it sounds lovely with your other daughters' names.

Bella Kate would be my pick.

your statistic cracks me up!! I don't know any. I don't like Isabella so I'd never use that just to turn around and use Bella.

ok so what MN goes with Scarlett? Georgia?

  • yeah, what the other ladies said! There has been a huge increase in babies named after Twilight...especially Bella/Isabella. My SILs dog is Bella so it's never been an option for me. I'd pass.

It's not *just* a flash in the pan teen reference. It's the preferred nickname for the number one girl's name in America.  There are going to be three other Bellas in this girls class. But the OP clearly doesn't care about that, because her other daughter is named Emma, which was the number one choice a few years ago.

I like Bella better as a nickname than a full name. Isabel/Isabella *is* popular, but it's also beautiful.

(Still trying to figure out how "Reese Addison" -- a boys named spelled wrong that's a current celebrity trend and a boy's name/surname trend based on another popular TV character -- could possibly be considered "old fashioned" but that's not the point of this post).

Reese is typically a girl and Reece is typically a boy. Addison is not a boy's name usually. Reese & Addison are both important family names that I have passed down to my daughter & we LOVE it! I also said I "like" old fashioned names...I never said Emma or Reese were old fashioned.

I merely mentioned that because virtually every other poster was using Twilight as a reason not to use the name. I think that's silly.

As you said, clearly the OP doesn't care about a name being popular. Why would I bring up that moot point when her other DD is named Emma?

Actually Reese is an American variant (that somehow turned girl) of the Welsh boy's name Rhys.

But that doesn't really matter...seeing as you never asked for opinions on your daughters' names. What matters is that you like them and your (adorable) daughters like them.

Reese is surname in my family line that I passed down, Addison as well.

I agree. I would not rule out Bella as a choice just because of Twilight. There are many names used in movies that people can positively/negatively associate a name to. Thanks everyone for the twilight tip ;) We obviously still have time to decide.

  • I like some of the other names on your list better than Bella (and not because of the Twilight reference).

  • Sorry! But it's more of a pet's name than a person!
  • I like Bella, but don't love it. Of the two options, I like Bella Kate more.

    I prefer Lillian.

  • Personally I find Bella better suited as a name for a pet. I know quite a few horses/dogs/cats with this name.

LOVE Lillian though. Lillian Kate would be my choice.

  • Bella sounds juvenile to me, not to mention boring.
  • Like it but don't love it..  Much prefer Scarlett or Georgia    and Love the MN Kate
