Who do you blame? (possibly controversial)

I don't know if this could be considered controversial but I thought just in case I would say so).

Who do you blame for the soaring gas prices? I am seeing A LOT of folks on FB sharing their outrage at the prices and saying things that leave me scratching my head.

Ex. A friend posted a status regarding the gas prices. Tons of comments were made and one in particular was a guy saying "I guess this is what "O" meant by "change", to which the status poster replied "Yes, more "change" in his pocket".

This puzzled me. Last time I checked "O" isn't reaping the benefits of the soaring prices. What is he secretly pocketing the bumped up price differences? That just seemed like a really odd statement to me. I see constant statuses complaining about the gas prices and our president and I am not sure how the two go hand in hand. Forgive me if I am just being ignorant here, but I don't think every single thing that goes wrong in this country should fall solely on his shoulders. That seems a bit..heavy?

What are your thoughts? Do you blame our President for what you are paying at the pump? If so, why? (and I do not mean that in any other way than pure curiosity, maybe I am just missing something..)

  • I thought it had something to do with Libya. Gas goes up every year though, I don't know why people are so surprised.

I agree.  I can't stand when people blame everything that goes wrong on our President.  Yes, there are probably things he could do differently, but what about everyone else.  Can 1 person really change EVERYTHING in the U.S.?

  • Didn't you know the President personally gets a royalty check every month for 75% of whatever is paid at the gas pump?

Just kidding. I don't really know why people think this. I think gas prices are often based on market speculation in oil, particularly when there's a large leap in oil prices. Also, sometimes if there's an issue that causes a shortage of gas or increases the cost of delivery, that will increase gas prices. For example, we had a pipeline burst a few years ago. That made it hard to get gas to the Phoenix area, so gas prices skyrocketed. Some of that was speculation, but some was due to actual increased cost/decreased supply.

The only thing I can think of that has a link to President Obama is the limitations on deep water drilling after the Gulf crisis last year.

  • Part of the President's job is to suck it up and take the blame for everything that goes wrong while he is in office.  I think it just goes with the territory.  That being said I don't blame him.  I'm at least smart enough to know that I don't know enough to know who to blame or if it is really just one person's fault.  One thing I do know is that the high price of gas sucks!

  • I think it's ridiculous and unacceptable to blame Obama for this.  He doesn't set the gas prices.  Anyone who blames him for this should be stripped of any and all voting rights because they're obviously idiots.

I think it's a combination of Libya, other middle east crises, our dependance on foreign oil (or any fossil fuel for that matter), and the greediness of the oil companies.

  • I feel like "O" gets blamed for so many things that are not directly his fault. Yes, he may be the president but I mean really people it is not like he says "This is how things are going to be done" and then it is. Our government as a whole has to agree on a decision in order for it to be made. There is no "one" bad guy here. /rant.

To answer your question - no I don't blame him for the gas prices. I think a number of factors are at play and I also agree with PP, gas prices are constantly rising. We can't just expect them to go down suddenly.

  • I just wanted to agree with you. I dont get it either, the gas prices have been in a rollercoaster for the pas 10years and Mr."O" have been in power only 3, on top of that he doesnt own any oil company, so i really wonder how they think that he is getting any "change" in his pocket Huh?

This is exactly how I feel, and from everything I have read this is the cause for the soaring prices. It just confuses me a little as to why so many people are just chalking it up to "our it's our greedy President". I don't understand the logic behind that thought. It seems...uninformed?

  • It's the oil companies, problems in the Middle East, and I am also going to blame the workers at the gas stations, they are the ones that actually do the dirty work by getting out their giant stick and changing the price from $3.98 to $4.13.. are you effing kidding me?!

Yeah, it's just the easy way out to blame Obama.  Just like it was the easy way out to blame Bush for 9/11.   It's ignorant drivel and it is most definitely uninformed.

I blame the laws of economics....supply & demand. I didn't blame Bush and I don't blame Obama. And I don't see what a president could possibly have to do with gas prices.

Supply & Demand is a HUGE factor. A few years back in our area there was a huge demand for gas (I can't remember exactly what the crisis was). Since there was a huge demand, people suddenly freaked that we would run out. Therefore EVERYONE started hitting the pump, draining them. So because of the mass hysteria...we ran out! The supply could not keep up with the demand. If there was available gas it cost a shiit load of money. This is nothing new..

Yup, yup, and yup. Everybody's said it. Problems in N. Africa, douchebaggery in the oil companies, fear, etc.

Beanie's right. Go as green as you can. I don't see things changing anytime soon. So we have to change ourselves, YKWIM?

I don't blame O for the rising gas prices (and is this a new nick name for him or something that people are calling him? It reminds me of Oprah.)

I honestly don't know who to blame. I understand gas prices are always rising, but to raise this much within a couple months is just plain maddening. Not that I'm mad at any one person in particular.

Haha, yea I had no idea he had received such a cutesy nickname either. I hadn't even heard it before! Totally reminds me of Oprah.

  • Speculators are mostly to blalme. They use the middle east as an excuse to hike up oil prices. The US gets most of their oil from themselves. After that, our largest suppliers are Canada and Mexico.

You can't say that he has absolutely no hand in this.  Obama has banned drilling in the Gulf - and that is impacting (and increasing) or reliance on foreign oil.

I don't think he is totally to blame.  However, you can't say that he has nothing to do with it as he is making decisions for our country that directly impact our oil production levels.

But, I guess I'm just an idiot thought who doesn't deserve the right to vote.

He.doesn't.set.the.gas.prices.  The oil companies do that based on oil prices, which is not the responsibility of the President of the United States of America to dictate.

Obama may have had some indirect hand in oil prices, but then you have to.  You buy gas, right? You have a large vehicle, right?  It's just as ridiculous to say that someone who drives a Hummer or an Escalade is the main contributer to high gas prices.

    FFS, LCB, don't be daft.

ITA.  I was more making a point of someone saying that Obama being in the wrong for stopping Gulf drilling after the Gulf disaster is completely short-sighted about the cost of paying for a gallon of gas today vs. the environment cost of the spill for possibly hundreds of years.

I'm not trying to make you feel bad.  I know where you're coming from and I understand.  It took me a long time to figure out exactly where to put the blame for gas prices and it's not one person.  It's not even 10 people/organizations.  Millions of people have their fingers in that pie.

I agree with Mrs G's open mind here.  I never said it was all (or really a lot) of Obama's fault.  It isn't.

But, he is making decisions about drilling in our country.  Even if that barely impacts the global market, it does impact it.

So yes, it is a small piece of the puzzle - but it is a piece none the less.  And denying that fact is a bit over the top, as is calling anyone who recognizes that Obama can, and does, make decisions that impact the oil and gas industry, an idiot.
