Cincinnati Babies

CD question RE: washing

We use primarily BG's but also some fitted cotton/bamboo and prefolds. We have a front loader and we're currently using rockin green hard rock. I know Cincinnati already has hard water, but I suspect there are additional minerals in our 100 yo house that makes it worse.I hit pause for about 30 mins almost every wash and always do an extra rinse cycle.

DD has a very mild rash all over the diaper area that comes and goes quickly but seems to itch her quite a bit. I *think* it has to do with the detergent itself or that it's not rinsing completely not rinsing completely. Anyone else have any other ideas or found a detergent that rinses better with hard water/HE machines?

Re: CD question RE: washing

  • We use regular Tide with our BGs and it really seems to get them very clean and I don't have to "strip" my diapers anymore.  I think it rinses out and cleans better than Charlie's Soap (what I used in the beginning).  DD and DS don't get diaper rash which is another plus :0)

  • When I was cding (BG's) I always used the regular tide detergent and never had any problems with them getting clean or her having a rash. I have heard that front load washers don't do as well as top loaders because the diapers dont actually soak in the water. I have no idea if that is true-we have a top loader, but maybe that could be a factor too?

This worked great in our front loaders.  I always got Tide regular powder, non HE.  Cut the amount of detergent down to half way to the "1" mark to avoid sudsing.  Once a month, I used the sanitize cycle, but routinely just heavy cycle with hot water.  I also stripped with RLR every 4-6 months just to make sure they were residue free.  My oldest CDs still look and smell new.

  • I use the BG brand detergent and put a little bleach in the wash every several weeks.  DD gets a rash if I wash with Tide powder because of the enzymes.

  • We also use regular Tide powder and it has worked well for us.  I used to use Purex Free and Clear, and I like Tide much better.  We have top loaders though.

  • Thanks ladies! I think I have some BG detergent samples somewhere and I'll give Tide a try. I also need to remember bleach!

  • I have switched to the grovia detergent Tiny Bubbles and LOVE it! It has really helped my diapers, especially the BGs smell cleaner.  I was using the Ecos brand and they always smelled bad.

For you Tide users, is it ok to use Tide Ultra Care Liquid for my HE?  Do I need to cut the amount?  That is what we use for our regular laundry.
