Job Interviews and Pregnancy Disclosure

Hi Ladies-

I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts were on this. I had a job interview today and got the job (it's P/T) but didn't tell them I was pregnant. I feel a little bad lying by omission but I really needed the job.  When would you tell them?

  • You were offered the job?  I don't think you had any obligation to tell them prior to the offer.  I would now initiate a conversation about when you will start, and let them know that you'll need to take X amount of time off, beginning on July/August X.

  • I agree with the pp. You do not need to tell them until you get an offer. Now that you accepted the offer, definitely let them know. Of course your maternity leave will be unpaid, but at least they can prepare for your time off.

    Congrats on the new job!

  • Personally, I wanted to make sure all potential new jobs were aware that I was pregnant for personal reasons. I would let them know now that you have accepted the job, like PP has stated.
  • at this point, if they couldn't see you are pg, then something is wrong with their eyes!! LOL

  • Thanks for all the advice, ladies. As it is part time I figure a few weeks off for the birth wouldn't be that big of a deal, and it is after their "busy time" of graduations and 4th of July parties. I'll let them know on Friday at my orientation.

And I may have strategically dressed to downplay my bump.  Embarrassed

  • I'm wondering the same thing ... I applied for a job that I know would be a phone interview first, then a flight to interview in person if things go well. I don't really want to shock them by showing up all preggers if I get the in-person interview, and in theory it is not OK for them to discriminate against me if I tell then in the phone interview. I don't think I can hide the bump ... I'm fairly small to begin with, so my belly sticks out pretty obviously.

  • Like some others have said, you don't need to tell them. I interviewed when I was about 20 weeks along and only planned on telling them once an offer was on the table. Basically, if they had called and offered me the job, I would tell them during that conversation. I didn't want to leave my current job without them already knowing and being okay with my maternity leave, etc.

I'm also surprised you were still able to hide it! They may have known, and just not said anything...since they legally can't. Smile
