share your evening/nighttime routine with 1-year-olds (please! :))

Can you share what you do (and for how long) as you put your 1-year-olds to bed (hopefully including dinner)? We would really like to find a way to incorporate bathtime into their nighttime routine, but they get so revved up by baths that it takes forever for them to calm down enough to sleep. When they were little baths were a nice calm event, but now that we're bathing them in the big tub together, it's just a crazy-fun splash time and not calm wind-down time at all.

We only have an hour from the time we get home from work/daycare until they go to bed. We're struggling to fit dinner/bath/etc into that time in a way that doesn't feel frenetic. Right now, we've been kinda all over the place, and the lack of consistency isn't helping, I'm sure. TIA for any and all suggestions!

  • We have a little more time to work with but essentailly it looks like this:

5:30 DH and I get home from work and get dinner for the twins

    5:45 Dinner

    6:00 Walk

    6:30 Play time

    6:50 Bath

7:15 Sippy cups of warm milk and calming down time (reading books or hanging out in their room)

    7:45 - 8:00 Bedtime

We adjust it based on how tired they are and weather.

  • We don't do baths every night but here's what our routine looks like on a bath night:

5:30/5:45 - We get home and start dinner/play with the boys while dinner is cooking

    6:15 (roughly) - Dinner

After dinner if there's time - playtime

    7:00 - Bath (if it's a bath night)

    7:30 - Bottles of milk

7:50ish - Go into the boys room to get into pajamas, read a book and go to bed and we try to have them in bed right about 8:00.

  • Our pediatrician said it doesn't matter if you bathe them once a day or once a week...so we chose once a week, and that's usually on the weekend.  Here's our usual routine.

    5:00 Dinner (solids)

Sometimes we give baths in this window.

6:15 Turn on sound machine and start bedtime routine.  One baby at a time gets a diaper and pajamas, BFs (working on weening, so that will change), and is put in his/her crib to sleep.

By 7 p.m. both are down for the night.

I LOVE this! I swear I feel so guilty for bathing the twins only twice (maybe three times if lucky) a week. It is just insane!
