Baby Names

Shira

I recently met a toddler named Shira and thought it was beautiful. I've never heard it before, which is a bonus in my book. Thought it might be a good suggestion for anyone looking for something a little different, but not too crazy.

It is pronounced Sheeer-uh.

It means 'song' in Hebrew. MusicMusicMusic

    Exactly this.

  • I'm in the minority because I didn't think of She-Ra at all.

Shira is nms, but I think it's pretty.

  • I think it's pretty, but I see how others got the She-Ra thing.  A nice alternative would be Shiri (shear-re), which means "my song" in Hebrew.

This is exactly what I thought too, but I am a child of the 80s.

  • It sounds like a pet's name.

  • Shira is lovely.  I don't think She-Ra at all.

    Nice Hebrew name.

Edited to add: I like Shiri too.  The meaning and religious background make the names appealing to me. Makes sense, as I chose Aaron (and Aharon for his Hebrew name) for my DS--after my grandfather.

  • I have no clue who She-ra or what's her face is... but Shira is a BEAUTIFUL name, and to me it sounds a bit Indian too. Her parents chose well.
  • Shira is a pretty common name for Jewish girls so I knew a few of them growing up.  I think it's pretty.  It doesn't make me think of She-Ra but I will assume your daughter is Jewish if you name her this :)

  • I also thought of the princess of power when seeing the name.
  • I went to high school with a girl named Shira, but she pronounced it Shy-ruh.

Same, and just curious to those that didn't... are you just younger and not so much children of the 80's?

And don't assume our children won't know, my son loves tele-toon retro and they play all the good stuff. My cousin's 3yo daughter was running around an indoor play yelling "I am She-ra!!!" so cute.

  • Super popular Jewish girls name. And I've always pronounced it Sheer-Ah.

There's also Shirin, which is a Persian take on Shira/Shiri and it's pronounced Sha-rin.

  • I didn't realize this was a name, but the very first thing I thought of when I saw the title of your post, were the Hebrew lyrics of an amazing song from The Prince of Egypt Soundtrack.

It's the song "When you Believe" (the longer Michelle Pfeiffer/Sally Dworsky version from the actual movie, rather than the Whitney Houston/Mariah Carey version that plays during the credits).

Here are the lyrics. (The meaning of the words are in parentheses.):

    "A-shir-a la-do-nai ki ga-oh ga-ah"
(I will sing to the Lord, for He has triumphed gloriously)
    ...
    "A-shir-a, a-shir-a, a-shir-a!"
(I will sing, I will sing, I will sing!)

If you haven't heard this song, I highly recommend viewing the scene on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJa4wtxbF58 (The lyrics I'm talking about above start about halfway through the song)

  • I think it's a beautiful name.  But I'm Jewish, so I've heard it many times before.  I'm also a child of the 80s, but would never think She-Ra.  It's pronounced differently.  Plus, I don't think it's a concern for this generation.

  • I knew a Shira in college. She pronouned it with the long I sound as in Shy-ra. It was a nickname though. Her given name was Nashira, which I believe is Indian.

Ditto. I LOVED She-ra and He-Man. I don't think anyone growing up with your daughter would associate it, though.

I grew up in the 80s too.  I don't think of She-Ra because I'm Jewish and it's a familiar Jewish name.  So I think of the people I've met with that name, not a cartoon.  Same with the name Ariel (or Arielle).  I don't think of the mermaid, I think of all the girls I grew up with named that.
