Alyse?

I really like the name Alyse/Alise... Not pronounced Alice..

How do you pronounce this name.. We are giving up on addison -- fear of popularity we think Ali is also a cute nn.. apparently we work backwords! ha ha h

Any suggestions for a better way to spell? Or other names with Ali nn's? Thanks again ladies.. Sorry if I am being annoying

  • I like either Elise or Alice.
  • If I saw this name, I would assume it was the parents' cre8ive take on Alice, and pronounce it as such.

FWIW, my name is Allie. I don't have a longer name. it works fine. But if you want something longer, Alice, Allison, Alexandra, or Alessandra all work very well.

You might also keep in mind----Ali is an Arabic man's name. Allie is a feminine nickname.

  • I wouldn't have mispronounced this name, personally. I knew what you were going for right away. I had a friend named Alyce in high school and she never had a problem with anyone calling her Alice either. I prefer the c spelling to the s.

  • I went to college with a girl named Alyse, and she didn't have a lot of trouble with people mispronouncing her name, but I prefer Elise.

  • My name is ilise ( I used a small i b/c it's always looks like double l's to me on here!), but many people quickly pronounced my name both Alise and Elise and I never minded. They are all really similar and I liked having a little bit of change now and then!

  • I had a student this year with the name Alyse.  No one ever mispronounced it or had trouble's with it.  I like it.  I used to always accidentally call her Alice only because that was what we would have called LO if he had been a girl.

  • I prefer Elise. That's DD's name. I think Alyse looks like the parents are trying to be cre8tive. I had to argue this point with DH when we picked DD's name. He liked Alyse because he knew someone who spelled it that way.

  • That's my sister's name (same spelling too), and I've only heard it mispronounced a few times in all her 29 years.

Most often people have said "Alice", accept for the woman announcing her high school graduation who said "Alee-see".  Also, it has been a little weird recently, my sister is house hunting, and talking about getting "a lease" feels awkward... because that's her name!

Over all, people usually complement my parents on their name choices.

  • I like Elise, there will be less confusion on the pronunciation that way.  I know it doesn't get you the nn you like, but I'm not a fan of nn's anyway.  If you really want a spelling that will allow for nn Ali, I would go with Alise.
