October 2011 Moms

You'd never believe what my Grandmother-in-law said!

During Easter dinner I stood up from the table to reach something behind us. GIL bellows out "Gee Sara, it looks like your behind sure is bigger than your front!"

Now mind you she's legally blind so I didn't take it personally but sheesh!

Re: You'd never believe what my Grandmother-in-law said!

  • That is really rude. My grandfather in law asked my husband if it was okay for us to be having kids since we are "getting up there in years". I am 28.

  • My own grandmother said that I didn't look pregnant, that I just "have a pot belly like all the girls your age".  WTF?

There are many times that my MIL doesn't have a filter...I've just learned not to take her seriously on those occasions.

  • My grandmother has no filter and never has!  When my mom was like 8 or 9 she told her she was like crisco, fat in the can.

Whenever she talks about someone she always refers to them based off their physical features, it's horrible.  She lives in assisted living now and one of the ladys that she is eats with is very overweight.  We all know her name is Joyce but my grandmother only refers to her as the fat one!  It's awful.

I'm scared about what she'll say to me when I fly up to NJ this weekend to celebrate her 90th birthday!

  • After I got married my husband's step-mothers' mother told me that marriage was treating me good because I had gained some weight...especially in my booty. I found it so offensive. Even more so because I was loading up my plate for Thanksgiving dinner. ugh. Mind you I was probably only 120lbs at the time and perfectly healthy. DH said not to be offended because she probably just thought I was too skinny before. Some people just don't have a filter.

I feel awkward every time I see my MIL since the start of my pregnancy because she always tells me I don't look pregnant. (I don't yet.) She's the only one who says that and I just really don't know how to respond. I usually say, Uh thanks. Which she has to ask if I FEEL pregnant. Well duh.

I believe it.  Only because my GIL is 93 and says the "darndest things."  The first time she met me (I'm a pasty white Irish girl) she said "I was really hoping Eric would meet a nice Italian girl from Church.
