Baby Names

Baby girl due any day and still doesn't have a name!!

We've gone through a million and a half names and can't seem to agree on any of them! We both love Allie, but I feel like it's just too much of a nickname than a full name, but my boyfriend doesn't like Allison and I don't like Alexandra so we're stuck! What names do you all love? I want something simple, something that everyone has heard before, but not something that is too overdone or too much of an (I'm sorry to say it) "old person" name.

Thanks so much!

  • Is Amelia too old sounding? Allie might be work as a nn and it is one of my favs.

  • I don't think Amelia is too old sounding, the problem is that it's my boyfriend's cousin's name! We're both very close with our extended families so we're trying not to choose any that are already taken by family, which of course makes it harder. Thank you for the thought though.

  • It's kind of a made up name but Aliana/Aliannah? I don't know the teen mom Leah has a daugher named this.

  • My hubby LOVES Allie but we had a hard time thinking of an "adult" name for it as well. Some names we considered besides Alexandra and Allison were Alyssa/Alisa, Alexa, Alexia, Alessa, Alana. Good luck!
  • I also like Mackenzie, Emma, and Gabriella. The only problem I have with any of them is that I don't really like the nick name Gabby for Gabriella. What do you all think of having Ella be the nick name for Gabriella? Is that too much of a stretch or would I just be doomed for everyone calling her Gabby for her whole life?

You do know Alexia is a reading disorder, similar to dyslexia ... right?

I actually knew an Alexia in high school, so the disorder is not the first thing I think of. (Just how many people that name their child Addison don't think of the disorder either). We ended up not going with any of these names though. But that is definately something to consider!

  • A friend of mine's daughter is Alyssa, Alli for short.  I don't know if that would suit or not.

My host niece when I lived abroad was Gabrielle, nn Ellie/Elle. It could work, you would just have to correct people.

I think you can make a person's nickname anything you want. I have a friend named Kerri and EVERYONE who ever met her before she was 10 still call her Mittie- she doesnt really have an explanation as to what it means or how it started, but if you call your kid something, people will follow suit.  If you have a Gabrielle and call her Elle, others will too. Just know that when she goes to middle school, she may decide she wants to be Gabby.

  • Some of my favorites, though a lot of them are popular, are Olivia, Ava, Ella, Emma, Abigail, Camille, Nora, and Mia.

I think Ella is a cute nn for Gabriella. We have family friends that have a daughter named Gabrielle. They hated the idea of her being called Gabby so when she was born they just corrected people. She's about 10 or 11 now and goes by her full name. I guess she doesn't like Gabby either since she hasn't decided to shorten it herself.

Addison's Disease is the FIRST thing I think of when I hear the word Addison.  I always wonder if the parents know how awful that disease is or if they knew about it when they thought it would be a pretty name.

If you want an "Allie" (which I agree works better as a NN than a "grown up" name), I think that Alison or Allison or Alicia would be nice.  Just about any "Al..." name can be shortened to "Allie".

  • Names that could use Allie as a NN:

Aliana, Alissa/Alyssa, Amelia, Alessandra, Alexa, Alexia, Alexis

Or you could go with what you love and just name her Allie. :)

  • My sister in law named their daughter "Allie" and i'm not a fan....i think it's to much of a Nickname, i like it as a nickname though!

With that being said, I love the name Aliana!

But i'm a sucker for the names that end in  "Anna/Ana".  I think they are very feminine.  and give a nickname an actual "name".

  • Allie is a nn for Natalie, believe it or not, which I love. I like Alexa. I also think Ella is an adorable nn for Gabriella. Very pretty.

  • Everyone else has given you a ton of good name alternatives. I just wanted to add this ... My full name is Allison, but other than when I'm first introduced pretty much everyone ends up calling me Allie (granted I do use Allison for "business" type things). My mom also has a friend whose full name is Alice, but her entire adult life she has never gone by Alice, she introduces herself and signs her name "Ali" (she's an attorney, now).

  • A friend just made up Alivia to use the nn Ali.  NMS, but for them it was a way to use Ali.  Now, after 6 weeks, people also call her Liv, Livi, Ali, etc :)

  • I think "Allie" looks like a nn, I think "Ali"  looks like a first name.

I like" Ellie" or  "Brie" or "Bria" for Gabriella.
