When do you hide eggs?

Do you get up early and hide them or make the kids wait upstairs while you go "check on something"? How do you orchestrate it?

Re: When do you hide eggs?

  • We set up before we go to bed. Eggs outside M's door, down the stairs, throught he house to the baskets.  Then after brunch with family we will do egg hunts outside, for that he will have to wait inside until it's safe.

So you leave eggs out all night? I would think they need to stay refrigerated.

Oh, sorry, we use plastic ones for the hunt.

I just asked my DH the same thing.  We only hid the real eggs when we were little and I swear they were hid when we got up  in the morning...  Hmm... Going to have to ask my mom tomorrow.

We never thought the Easter Bunny hid the eggs.  We always knew it was our parents.  We also only used plastic eggs.  They would close all the drapes and keep us inside while they hid them outside.  If they left them out all night it would either rain or raccoons/cats would come get them.
What did you think the Easter bunny did then? Ours worked out because Steve woke up before the kids anyway. He just hid them then and it was all good. He even made coffee.

  • We never hunted for real eggs, either.  When my sister and I were young, it was just chocolate and candy.  A few years later, they switched it to candy inside the plastic eggs.  But by the time I was about 8, I'd figured out Santa and assumed the EB was also my parents.  I proceeded to ruin it for my younger sister, too. (My mom was very upset.) So, ever since then, we knew it was my parents hiding the stuff.  I hid it for my younger brother once, which was actually more fun b/c I made it way harder on him than my parents and grandparents ever did! :-)

We always thought the Easter bunny brought our baskets, and my parents hid those. We knew my parents were the ones hiding the real eggs outside. It was just a fun game I guess.

Oh I see.  Our parents gave us the baskets so I didn't think about that!  :)   So we got baskets from my mom and eggs from the bunny.  Well we made the eggs, but he hid them.  I guess that's sort of lame - I'm not sure he really brought anything other than just coming and hiding things.  Hm... weird?

    Hm... weird?

The whole thing is a little weird.  DH and I aren't sure if/how we'll do anything for Easter with kids.  We don't celebrate it and I never even know when it is until people talk about it.  Neither of us have done anything Easter-y since moving away from parents, and we're not religious about it, either.  The egg hunt pics are cute, but I don't know how we'd explain it all.

Same way you explain Santa. Something fun that happens.

  • We only hide plastic eggs inside and did it lastnight before we went to bad. She was thrilled this morning.

Yeah, I guess that's true.  I just never considered Easter a real holiday, I guess.  I'll celebrate Valentine's though, so go figure. :-)

  • We did them in the afternoon - just the plastic ones since I can put coins in them. We dyed eggs, but I don't want to put them outside - they're only good for 2 hours at room temp, and I've sat through way too many food handler classes to not be paranoid. I'm also looking forward to egg salad sandwiches - yum!

Exactly this for us. We don't go to any services in the morning, so that aspect is out for us. I'm not really in touch with our German roots, but I suppose we could always do an Oster Hase nest when they're older...they could make one out of sewing scraps and yard stuff. I kind of like that tradition, but it wouldn't be any of the manufactured nests/baskets. I'm in a big anti-waste, purging, no-more-crap frame of mind right now, and this holiday happens to come with a lot of it. I've tossed a lot of baskets and fake grass away in my time.

E also has sensitive bowels and she got so stopped up after Superbowl that she was in pain trying to go to the bathroom. I don't want to do that to her again, so we're changing our frame of mind: holidays don't have be about the junk food. That's not to say we don't get our chocolate on, but in moderation and we try really hard not to use a holiday as an excuse to binge.

For us, it's all about getting together with people and it seems like a good way to kick off spring. I'm sure those ideas will evolve as we age, and that's cool too...I like being able to change.
