Baby Names

Thoughts on our (tentative) girl's name?

We have our boy's name picked out: Oliver Logan, named after one of our dear friends, and DH's middle name.

But we are having issues agreeing on a girl's name...here's what we have agreed on. Let me know what you think:

Elliott Grace

Re: Thoughts on our (tentative) girl's name?

  • I like it-- nn Ellie would be really cute. (I like boys' names as girls' names-- our choice if we have a girl is Emerson.)

  • Hmm, not so sure about this one. I consider Elliott to be a very masculine name, but that's just me.  Ellie, however, I LOVE!

  • I LOVE Oliver Logan, it's a great name! I actually like Elliott too, but I see it as a boy's name.

  • I love it! This baby (a girl) was going to be Elliott for a while until DH started having second thoughts. I, however, am the minority here and love traditionally boy names for girls. The trend is not popular on this board at all. I do love it, though, wonderful choice!

  • It's okay, I think Grace is too popular though.

On a side note, I actually babysat for 2 different girls named Elliot when I was in high school (8-10 years ago or so). They're both probably in their late teens/early 20s now.

And on another side note, one of the Elliots had a sister named Stewart:).

  • No! Elliot is a boy's name! Don't take another one over to the girl's team! I am a big fan of boy's names as nickname for a girl, but not just a straight up male name. What about Elliana, Ellery or Ellison for the Ellie nick name?

I love your boy name thought!

  • Elliot is a boy's name. I dislike it more than words can express.

Oliver is popular but at least it's for the correct gender.

I personally think Elliott for a girl is terrible, but that is just my honest opinion.  I cannot stand boy names on girls. I also do not understand the fascination people have with doing so (never will). I would read this essay.

The possible nickname of "Ellie" doesn't help much either. As an Ellen, I have to say that I hate this nickname, especially the enormous trend right now.

Your boy name, however, is wonderful. LOVE Oliver.

That said, it is your decision, so congrats on finding names!

I don't like Ellie either... Her name would be Elliott, not Ellie. My DS is named Brenton and people like to shorten it to Brent, we are always like "No, not Brent, Brenton."

Boys' names for girls isn't for everyone. But when DH and I think of Elliott, we think more of Dr. Reed from Scrubs, than Mya's boyfriend from Just Shoot Me. Plus, neither of us have EVER met a male Elliott, just females.

    What about Elliott from ET?

I strongly dislike Elliott for a girl.  And even Elliott on Scrubs was named as such because her parents really wanted a boy, so....

If you remember in Scrubs, when we get introduced to Elliot, she said she was named that because her parents wanted a boy. That seems like a weird namesake for a girl...But, that's just my opinion.

Dislike.  Elliot is a boy's name.

I also am slightly horrified that we are naming our children after characters in TV shows...

    This.

I do like Oliver, though - it made our short list for boys' names the first time around.

  • Great boy's name! I actually like Elliot for a girl but I actually prefer more masculine girl's names (I hate "frilly" girl's names). That being said, I think that the both the nickname Ellie and the name Grace are overdone.

  • Ugh, please no don't name your daughter Elliott. It's a boy's name end of story. She will hate it and you'll have to explain yourself (in a bad way) the rest of your life. Trying too hard to be unique is obnoxious.

Love the boy name. I hope you have a boy.

  • Hold on to your knickers! Announcing a boys-name-for-a-girl is dangerous around here!

I'm not crazy about Elliott, but love the nn Ellie, so it evens out for me. I like Grace, but it is one of those "filler" nns that tends to bug me. I prefer it as a fn.

Overall, I like it, but I like the nn Ellie or Ellie Grace much more than Elliott.

  • I have an almost 20 month old DD, In her music class is a girl named Elliot. The little girl doesn't have much hair and usually wears clothes that aren't obviously girly. That being said I had no idea for 3 weeks she was a girl until her mom said something about "her". Just something to think about. My DD is very girly with long hair and it bugs me to no end when someone say" he" or what a cute boy. It may bother you to when in the same situation...

OR...maybe she really doesn't know any men/boys named Elliot. The only Elliott I've ever known was my grandfather (it was his middle name) and he was 86 when he died 7 years ago.  I've not heard the name on anyone IRL since.  So with more girls being given names that traditionally belong to boys, I don't see  why it would be so far-fetched for OP to only know girls with this name.  I do agree that she should do what she wants.  Who cares about random people and their judgments?

  • Honestly, I think a lot of people will assume Elliott and Brenton are brothers.  Also, even if you don't like Ellie, your daughter may want to be called it.  It may be important to her to have a feminine name.  I would keep looking.
