If you have a swiffer mop, come in please!

I had one back when they first came out and I wasn't crazy about it, but I just don't have the time to really do a wet mop in the kitchen any more, and I know Swiffers have changed since then. Does anyone want to do a quick review for me? Pros/cons? I have linoleum and hardwood floors.

Re: If you have a swiffer mop, come in please!

  • I have one that I bought a few months ago and I do not like it.  I feel like it doesn't get the floor clean.  For example, I cleaned the floor last Saturday morning...Saturday night, I spilled some OJ on the floor and wiped it up with a paper towel.  The paper towel was dirty, like I hadn't washed the floor in 2-3 weeks. I also don't really like the cleaning solution.  I feel like it leaves my floors sticky or something.

Because of that I'm now watching for sales for those steam mops.  They are supposed to work really well, and sanitize the floor, which is a huge plus for me.  I hate germs, especially in the kitchen!

  • I've had one for a year now and love it! It is nice to have the same thing to put both the dry and wet pads on. I always use the broom for bigger stuff, then the dry sweeper pad and then the wet one. It doesn't take too long for me. The only issue I've had is if you have a bigger house or one room happens to have dirtier floors than the wet pad doesn't stay wet enough for all the floors.

Yeah, I had a coworker who bought a Shark and she wasn't crazy about it. Someone really needs to invent something that actually cleans those stupid divets in the linoleum.

I used to have one and loved it till I found out the soap in the wet jets could severely harm pets.  Supposedly it is hard on their kidneys and if they step on the floor when its wet then lick their paws its bad news bears.  So I threw mine out.  Been pretty interested in the new ones (don't know brand) that you put your own cleaning solution in...Then you can use the trusy vinegar to clean floors and no one gets hurt.

Same here.  I have tiny dogs and they would always lick their paws after I used the thing, plus I never was too crazy about it.  I have a Hoover Floormate and I LOVE it.  I definitely keep the pups out when I use it, but it works better than anything else I've tried - even on our white grout.

  • I never felt like the Swiffer got our floors clean enough for me and having two dogs, that was an issue.  I LOVE my Shark steam mop and would never go back to a Swiffer.

  • We have a swiffer wetjet and I love it. We have all tile floors and it works way better than a normal mop. When we first got it I went through like 4 pads getting the floor clean, I didn't realize how dirty they were!!  I clean them until the pad comes back white. It can get a little pricey because you have to use plenty of the fluid, but it's just easier and more efficient than a mop.

Edit: I will not be using our swiffer again. I did a little research and feel horrible for not doing it sooner. I just don't feel like it's safe to use around my son (I always swiffer while he's awake...he likes helping). I bought a steam mop.

  • I bought the Swiffer wetjet a few months ago and absolutely hated it.  Most of my house is wood floors so I hated having to use two different mops and I felt that it didn't clean my tile floors (not exactly sure of the material) in the kitchen well at all.  So, I wouldn't recommend getting it.  I'm also looking into a steam mop.

  • Ok...I just read the quotes about it being toxic to small pets. I don't want to use that around my son!

Anybody who has a shark...would this one work or do you need a more expensive one??

  • I have a Swiffer Wet Jet and really don't like it. Most of our place is carpet, so I only have the kitchen, bathroom, and foyer to do and it really doesn't get our floors clean. But because I have such small areas, I use it in between using the steam mop.

  • I have the more expensive Shark mop, and I love it!!  I can't say for that one, but I'd read reviews online

  • I have tried pretty much every machine and floor cleaning contraption but the best is to use one of those microfiber mop things with the removable pad you can throw in the wash and windex. Spray the windex on a section of floor and mop it right up. It cleans really well and leaves a nice sheen on the floor without the waxy coating which leads to buildup. I use this on my tile and wood laminate.

That's the one I have. I have laminate floors (saving up to buy wood) and it works perfect! I really love it. It's easy and even gets up scuff marks if you go over it a few times. When the steam comes out I feel like I'm getting the floors so clean. I spray a few mists of 409 down before I steam.

  • I have always mopped the old fashioned way but recently was given a swifter as my sister swore by it and gave me one. I HATE IT!! Really doesn't get much done. I feel like I have to work a lot harder to clean small surfaces and it stinks to be honest.

  • Our Swiffer Wet Jet was a piece of junk.  They design them to break after a few years of use (the thing that holds the bottle is not really strong enough to hold the bottle when it is full of the liquid), so the second time we broke one, we pitched it.  We bought a Eureka Envirosteamer after reading a ton of reviews, and I love that thing.  It gets our floors way cleaner than the Swiffer ever did, and without chemicals.  It actually sanitizes the floor.

I will say though that I love the Swiffer vac.  With a dog that sheds a ton and two cats, I give that thing a workout and it does great.  So we Swiffer Vac daily and then steam clean our floors about once a week.

  • I've had a few, and I like them, but they are NOT a good replacement for a regular mop. They really only work well for spot cleaning and quick mops in between regular mopping. For example, if you spill something on the floor and need to mop it up, a Swiffer is totally useless. They are good for when you want to clean quickly and hauling out the mop and bucket is too much trouble.

I don't believe that this is true I heard this several years ago and it has been debunked by several sources.

That being said I don't like the swiffer wet jet, I prefer a steam mop.  I got shark steam mop for Christmas 2 years ago and love it (yes I am a nerd who asks for cleaning gadgets for holidays).  I still have a swiffer wet jet only because I am trying to use up the solution and pads I have left and only use it on my bathroom tile floors.  The solution always left my hard woods streaky and ugly.

  • Oh geez so sorry about the multiple post, stupid computer.
  • Ditto PP, the whole toxic to pets thing was an internet hoax. No worries.

  • I dont like it. My MIL loves hers and got me one but I feel like it leaves the floor sticky. That being said I got this awesome "mop" at the fair awhile back and all you use is hot water and my floors feel sooo clean. Never going back to swiffer.

  • i find it easier to really soak the floor first with lysol all in one bottle  and a mixture of water to dilute it down let it sit for a few minutes then swiffer everything up  got super clean by the way I have a 5 year old Chihuahua  and ive never had a problem with my sniffer or the dog

I use the steam mop on the tile and the rubbermaid reveal microfiber mop on the wood. You can use your own cleaner and the pads are reusable. It gets compared to the Swiffer Mop --- in that it is better.

These are my thoughts exactly. Just a note about the steam mop. Be careful what kind of floor you use it on. I'm not sure what brand my mom had but it was super powered or something because it lifted the corner of her linoleum kitchen floor and stripped the varnish layer off her hard wood floor. But she still loves it!! haha Just look on what kinds of floor you should/shouldnt use it on before using!
