I'm not a teacher but a staff member at a high school and the same rules apply for maternity leave for me.
My last day for the summer is June 16th. In my county you do not start your leave until the first day of scheduled work so my leave will start the last week of August. I am using our short term disability leave so I will not be returning until late November.
Most of the teachers I work with leave on their due date (or earlier if they go into labor earlier) and return after the short term disability period (around 15 weeks).
Our last day of school is May 20th, then I'm going back in August for professional days (~4 days) so I can meet my sub, get things somewhat organized, etc. My leave will officially begin the first day of classes. I'm using my accrued sick leave and it's looking like I have enough time built up that I'll go back about the second week of October.
I teach Kindergarten in So Cal. My maternity leave starts on the day the baby is born. I get six weeks for a regular birth or eight weeks for a C-section. Baby's due date is July 11. If that is actually the due date, I'll have 4 weeks in the summer and I'll get 2 weeks off of school. My sick leave days pay for my sub so I will still get my regular paycheck- thank God!
My ideal would be to quit my job for 5ish years and stay home and take care of babies. Unfortunately, my job has the benefits and a better paycheck than Hubby's. So, when I go back to work, Hubby will change his work hours so he can be home with our baby.
All that to say, I'll be going back to work in the 3rd week of August. Boo.
Like PP, my maternity leave starts the day the baby is born. If he comes on time (July 30th) I will essentially lose out on 3 1/2 weeks of pay since our first paycheck comes toward the end of August. They will not pay me for summer vacation days. I get 6-8 weeks depending on how I deliver. My school is on trimesters so DH and I have been saving so I can take all of Tri 1 off. I will go back to work on December 5th. DH & my family will take some time off to watch the baby before Christmas break and baby boy will start daycare in January.
I wish we could afford for me to take the entire year off but DH and I moved in September and our mortgage is $1000 more a month that it was in our condo. We will also be paying into my insurance while I am on leave since my insurance is better than his.
I have a friend in FL who can take her leave once school starts. I wish I had that option. The good news is I should have plenty of sick days saved up for baby #2 and hopefully we'll be able to afford more time off at that time.
In my district, you get 12 weeks off and it starts the day you give birth or the day the doctor writes you out. You have to use it over the summer.....you don't get summer days off as "extra" days
If you deliver vaginally, it is 6 weeks paid and 6 weeks unpaid.
If you deliver via c-section, it is 8 weeks paid and 4 weeks unpaid.
We are required to use our sick days for the paid portion.......if you run out, you have to "borrow" days from the district (so the following year you get less sick days.....).
The gist of it is that they have to pay you while you are under the doctor's care. Once you go to your pp appt, they ask for a note putting you back at work and that is when you stop getting paid.
Even if you have enough sick days to use past your paid period, they won't let you use them.
I will be back the 1st day of school because I have been out since January (on bedrest.....).
Even if I hadn't gone out on bedrest, I would most likely be starting on the 1st day because I was only taking the 8 weeks paid off.
My leave is for the 6 weeks following the birth of LO and my EDD is July 2. Yes that means most likely I will get NO days of maternity leave (I realize I will be off for summer break). I will be taking the 1st quarter off without pay to stay home, so I will go back early Nov.

My last day of school is May 27, but my maternity leave doesn't start when I have the baby since we get paid for 12 months. I will get 60 days for normal delivery and 90 days for csection. So I will go back in late Sept. or mid Oct.

My leave will start Sept. 1 regardless of when in the summer the baby is born. However, I only get 6 weeks paid, and then the rest of leave is unpaid. I will be taking one year off and returning the next school year.

I'm due July 1st. We have to use our sick time up first, so I"ll be taking 4 weeks off once kids come back August 8th. Like someone else said, I'll go in for the pre-school week to set up my room and get my sub ready to go. I'll start back the Tuesday after Labor Day. Total I'll have 8 weeks at home.
A friend who has had 2 babies recommended not using up all of my sick time and coming back with a few days still in the bank, in case the baby is sick. So I'll come back with 6 days left in my bank.
We get 20 days before the birth of a baby and 20 days after. I am due on July 8th but scheduled for a c section on June 29th so based on that date my last day will be June 1st. Since I am having the baby in the summer I lose out on my 20 days after. I am going to use 12 weeks of family leave when school starts and go back right before Thanksgiving.
Conceived twins with IVF January 2008. Lost baby a at 20 1/2 weeks due to premature rupture of membranes and held onto baby b. Baby b (Brandon) born at 26 weeks and 1 day on July 5, 2008. Wesley born full term on June 29, 2011.

If you read my post a few days ago, you know I have been going round and round with my HR about my leave, so I know FMLA really well at this point.
They cannot count days that you are not regularly scheduled to work at part of your leave (this is assuming you are using FMLA leave and not a special maternity policy of your district). Every single one of us who qualifies for FMLA can take 12 weeks off beginning the first day teachers are supposed to go back. The can't count it back to the birth if you weren't supposed to be working those days anyways.
I will be on summer break when baby is born but as of now I am planning on returning on October 4. DS will be 3 months old. Wish I could stay home longer but that is not in the cards for us now.
In my district, Chicago, my leave does not start until school starts again (around the end of the august). You can take as many of your sick days as you want so that you're paid, but when they run out, the money does and you are off as unpaid. Insurance will cover you for five months after you leave begins. You have to pay your contribution into it if you are not being paid from the district any longer. After five months, you have to go on to cobra. I am planning on taking the year off after doing some super saving throughout the pregnancy, and going on to my hubby's insurance at the beginning of the school year. My HR rep was very informative and helpful with all of the details, as well as colleagues from school who took time off. They would be your best resources to check in with! Good luck
In my district in Massachusetts leave starts on the day the baby is born (EDD July 29th). From that date I am allowed 8 weeks - since part of my leave will be over the summer I don't have to use my sick time for it (though I'll be "paid" because I choose to stretch my pay over 12 months instead of 10)...but starting on the first day of school (August 29th) I will start to use my sick time. If I "run out" of sick time before my 8 weeks is up (around Sept 23rd) I have to apply to borrow from the district.
I teach at a private school. I plan on working the first week of summer session (in July - if I make it), then going out on disability. My disability will run out on our August break, so I can't file for anything else at that time. As of now, my plan is to go back to work for the first week in September, then take 12 weeks off - 6 of which will be partial pay. This will bring me to the beginning of December, and then I'll have to go back or I'll lose (well, have to pay the full amount - around $900/month - for) insurance coverage.
