My lil girl was born 5 weeks early and shes been having issues with gas. We have her on Simalic sensitive and use Dr Browns bottles. We use gripe water and colic calm. All have reduced her gas but she still screams in pain for a good hour daily. When do babies digestive systems get settled? Would i use adjusted age?
Re: gas question
Are you sure it's not reflux instead of gas. I finally figured out after trying everything that Nolan had reflux after feeding. He would SCREAM for an hour after each feed. We now sit him upright after every feed for a half hour & he is fine now. He still has a "bit" of gas issues but no where near where he was.
Additional things that I do for his gas -
#1 - Make sure he burps good - no matter how long it takes. I also burp several times during a feeding. We use the Dr. Brown bottles as well which really help!
#2 - Switched his formula to the Enfamil Gentlease as suggested from our pedi. Before we were on Enfacare & he would spend countless hours each day grunting & moaning to try & get gas out - not sleeping because it was so bad.
#3 - I put a drop of the Mylicon (spelling?) into his bottles when I make them a long with two of those Hyland colic tabs. If he is still fussy a half hour after his feed then I will give him another drop.
#4 - Rub (massage gently) his belly when he is fussy & his tummy is really hard
#5 - Move his legs up to his chest - back & forth to release the gas.
Hope any of this helps - good luck!! It's so tough to see them in pain!!
Great advice already given but one thing I did do is give the Mylicon right before the feeding so it was already going through her system by the time she started drinking. Another thing that worked for us would be for me to sit down with my legs close together and lay her across while on her belly, gently rocking side to side and rubbing her back, while supporting her head. Sometimes this would help bring up the gas bubble. Or you can hold her against you and gently bounce. Movements helps. Another thing our pedi suggested if nothing else seemed to work was to give a very small amount of warm water. Be careful if you try this because sometimes they can choke on the water where it is so thin. We would give her less then an ounce of water on the warmer side and then burp her, sometimes it made her feel alot better. Another suggestion from the pedi was to get a blanket right from the dryer and wrap her in it, sometimes the heat will help. I'm sorry you are going through this, it is so hard to see them so uncomfortable, this seems to be a terrible phase they go through. Hopefully she will overcome it soon.
