Not using them. Purchasing a breathable bumper down the road if LO starts getting legs/arms caught in slats.
Also, it's not just about them rolling into the bumper, it's about the bumper reducing airflow in the crib. Health Canada recommends not using them period as they are a SIDS and suffocation risk.
Possibly dead baby or pretty crib- doesn't seem like a difficult choice.
Absolutely not. No way on Earth is it worth it to me. We'll get a breathable one later on if he needs it, but a pretty crib doesn't matter to me above his airflow. It doesn't matter if he can roll over or not.
We used them for our first DD, but I am unsure about this time around. We are trying not to buy anything new, but might end up buying the breathable one.

I planned to use a breathable bumper, but it won't fit our crib. So we're going without and hoping he's not prone to sticking his arms and legs out and getting stuck.
Possibly a breathable one down the road. So many people think that SIDs is caused by babies rolling over and getting into the bumper and not being able to breathe. If this was the case, then then the cause of death would be identified - suffication, not SIDs.
Many people now believe that bumpers keep the CO2 inside the crib, rather than out through the slats, so the baby isn't receiving fresh oxygen. This is also why it is recommended to keep a fan on - to help with air circulation.

Using ours. My parents are both medical professionals (my mom a retired OB nurse) and have had kids who had bumpers in their cribs with no problems.

Your decision to use one or not makes no difference to me, but your reasoning is lacking. There are many things that could be put in to the category of " my parents did this, and we were fine" ect. There have been peer reviewed studies that have shown increased risks. Not ALL babies die of SIDS of course, which would be why your parents had kids who had no problems.
My parents had kids who did not ride in car seats, and all turned out ok. DH's parents were born to smokers, and survived. The point is, do what you feel best, but PLEASE use more research and reasoning than that.
Using! My sister's best friend's baby got his arm stuck in his crib, the fire department had to come and saw the crib to get him unstuck and he lost mobility in his arm. It was a regulation sized crib and he still managed to squeeze his arm in there.
With DS I had them in his crib until he started rolling around, then they came out and I put in breathable ones. Once he started pulling up, those came out too.
Our bumper came in 4 pieces. I think I am going to use the back one. It's up against the wall so I don't see it blocking much airflow. I also plan on having a fan in the room to help with airflow if needed.
Our bumper was included in the bedding set, which I'm still confused on why they make them if you can't use the bumper or quilt. I am enjoying the sheet and dust ruffle though...lol
The statistics for SIDS is greater due to many circumstances. They are saying that yes the chances of suffocation are higher with children up to 1 yr if they have a bumper, blanket or toy in bed with them. They also say they if you take your child to bed with you and if one parent smokes you have a higher chance of SIDS occurring as well as a lower socio-economic back ground.
They change their mind about everything all the time... they still sell them though right?
Do your research and do what you think is best, this is an opinion that everyone will differ on. I haven't made my decision yet. LO will be in a bassinet in my room for a while so I have time to think about it.

Yeah, just because they sell them means you should use them. I also don't buy anyone's excuses that DO use them honestly. Why have them in there until they start rolling around?! If you're soooo worried about limbs getting caught, then it shouldn't matter if they can't roll around. So it has to be looks. I see no other reason. In regard to your first sentence, SIDS is not just about suffocation. They are not the same.
I'm still confused on why they make them if you can't use the bumper or quilt.
It's plain and simple to make money. If they sell them then people will buy them and use the excuse that "oh well they still sell them so they must be safe to use." They just want your money. A lot of people use the quilt still for tummy time, hanging out in the glider/rocker, etc.

Well why didn't I think that they just want my money. lol. We are hanging the quilt on the wall.

Not using them. I might consider the breathable ones once DS can roll around, but nothing in the begining.

Not worth the risk to me.

Didn't use anything with DD & never had a single issue, ever, with getting caught in anything so we will NOT be using one for this guy.
I really don't get those who do use them

Not using anything, per Health Canada's recommendation.
Frankly, everyone that says they are using them always has really lame or ignorant reasoning behind it.
