Vent...mean people!

ok so maybe I should be posting this on the "name board" but I recently told a stranger ( a cashier) my name choices and she made a face!!   II didnt even ask her opinion!!  I am purposely not telling my family or friends the names until the baby is born but I figured it wouldnt hurt to tell a stranger...boy was I wrong.  I left CVS in tears!!  Why are people so mean!!??

PS...the names are

Jamison Ava for a girl ( hubbys name is James so i thought it was a cute idea)

and Holden James for a boy ( named from my all time favorite novel The Catcher in the RYE)

You did post this on the BNB.  But, you haven't gotten any responses.

There is nothing feminine about Jamison.  It's terrible.  I would switch the two names to Ava Jamison.

Holden James is a perfectly legitimate, masculine and spelled correctly name.

I know that when we ask about our name choices we as asking for opinions, but some responses seem over the line to me. I don't think there is anything wrong with giving alternatives, but to say that a name choice is "terrible" is really hurtful. That said, I do like Ava Jamison better, but if you like Jamison, go for it!

Unfortunately, if you're going to share, you have to be prepared for not everyone to like or agree with your choices.  A face is better than a comment like, "WTH are you thinking using those?"

I can understand being annoyed by her reaction, but tears seem a bit of an overreaction.  I mean, do you really care what she thinks?

Not to be insensitive, but I can see why she made a face. Jamison is not a name you hear often for a girl.  But I do like "Ava".  : )

I think Holden is a great name for a boy... it was on my shortlist for boy names

However, I am not crazy about Jamison for a girl... I just think of the whiskey.. sorry!  Jaime is a nice faminine form of James.

I LOVE the name Ava... beautiful indeed.

    Yup, this for us too.

People are more likely to keep their opinions to themselves if the baby is already named, as opposed to if the name is still only an option.

Your kid, your choice.  You totally could have told her to shove it.

BUT - when you name your child something super unique, different, or a name meant for the opposite sex, you're going to get reactions like that.  You just are.  If you choose to stick with that name, it's something you're going to have to learn to deal with - and let roll off your back.  If it's going to bother you every time someone says something like that to you (or if someone says things like that to your little girl), it would be worth considering another name.

I think you should name your kids whatever you want to, but you also have to be aware that if you name your child something unusual (people will think you named her after the whiskey, no doubt), people will comment on it...to you and also to her. People are going to ask her if she was named after alcohol.

So if you want to name her Jamison, go with it, but be aware of those things.

I like both of those names. Before we knew we were having a girl our name choices were Jamison Murray for a boy and Addison Raelyn for a girl. Ray is a family name so we wanted to incorporate it somehow.

Yea, I don't see why people can't just at least smile and nod if they don't like it...clearly she was just making polite conversation with you, can't she also have a polite response?!

But since you posted the names, I'll say that I love the name Jameson, but not so much for a girl. Holden James I like those.

Sorry but this is exactly what I thought when I read the post. That is the literal meaning, so I'm not sure why you would want a daughter named "son of James" But really, to each their own!

I think they are both beautiful names, The fact that they have a meaning to them make them even better. Cause when the baby gets older and asks you why you named them that you can explain it. I hope its a girl. cause i love that name. Who cares what people think. its you and your family that are going to be in the childs life the most. Have confidence in yourself and everything will be fine. :]

Jamison is a boy's name, so that is probably why the cashier made a face.  I agree with PP and that Ava Jamison would be so super cute.  I'm a teacher, so I've heard a lot of names out there...but never this one for a girl :)

If it is a name that you love then you need to be able to stick up for it. If you can't then you shouldn't expect your child to, JMHO.

FWIW, my SO's name is James and we are using Jacqueline as a MN. Our DD's FN is Dagny. People either love it or hate it and we're fine with that. Our baby, our choice and her story.

We picked a unique name (and not, it's not 'Unique') and I learned to just stop asking people for opinions, even on the bump (looks like you got a lot of similar reactions from people on here). I don't blame you for crying. These hormones are crazy. I cried while singing a Taylor Swift song the other day. Your skin will have to get thicker eventually but for now while you're still sensitive, just keep the names to yourself :)

Name your child whatever you want, but please grow a thicker skin and get used to confused/ disapproving faces if you plan to name your daughter Jamison. Not only is it a boys name, but since it means son of James, it's kind of like a double boys name! You may not be familiar with it as a boys name, but it is increasing in popularity and your daughter will be surrounded by male Jamesons, and people will become more familiar with it as a boy's name and will always expect a guy when they see her name written. Somewhere on the baby names board there's a link to an article written by a woman with a boy's name about how it's impacted her life-- it was full of annoyances.

    THIS.

Plus, if James is potential to be the middle name of your boy why not make it the middle name for a girl?  Honestly though, Jamison is NOT a girl name.  Think of what that poor girl will have to suffer through for her entire life.

Trust me -- most of the people I run into think Robyn is a boy name (well, spelled Robin) so I've been there and would never do that to my child.

I like boy/boyish sounding names for girls with really feminine middle names. At the end of the day it's all about what you and DH like not anyone else.

I personally really dont like Jamison for a girl. You are going to name your kids whatever you want but, I just thought I would throw in my 2 cents. I think Ava Jamison is a lot better.

I may be different in this, but I love the name Jamison.  It is unique, and can be shortened easily to Jamie if she doesn't like it. (I like the idea of giving the kid the option of nicknames, since I have used one most of my life)

I also think Holden is a great name, but I might have made a face hearing it 'cause I actually hate Cather in the Rye.  With that said ignore the personal preferences of others, everyone has weird pet peeves (ex/ me hating Cather in the Rye) that influence them.   You are the one that has to raise the person you name, it is more important for you to love the name than anyone else.

I think everyone should keep thier opinion of names to themselves. Its the age old saying, "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all".

Seriously though WhoTheF cares what you name your kids. If they have a problem with your name choices they should stop and think, "I wonder how many people hate my kids names?"  (Answer plenty).  Truth is we all have an association with a name.  I for example hate the ever classic Sarah because of a mean girl in school.

Ps I love unique names so good for you!

I was just going to say this. Please do not name your daughter Jamison... I think most people would associate this with the porn star (Jenna Jameson). Jamison is just not feminine at all. You could get away with it as a middle name and do Ava Jamison if you want, Or just do like Jamie or something if you want to honor your DH.
