Pampers or Huggies?

What is the difference? Again, since I am new to all of this I am clueless, but curious. My parents want to start buying diapers to stock-pile and they (among other people) are asking which I will use. I really don't know the difference. Can you ladies offer any insight? :)

  • That's really nice of your parents, but you probably want to wait until the baby is born.  Certain brands, because of material and/or shape, work better for certain babies.  I personally used Target diapers for my DD and never had any problems--and they are TONS cheaper.  But I've heard too many stories of someone buying several boxes of a given brand of diaper only to find out it irritated the baby or didn't fit well.

    Oh, good to know.

  • I'm also a first time mom and I've asked my friends and they all prefer Pampers. I'm not sure of their exact reasons, but they all said they used both and liked Pampers more. That's what we'll be going with!

  • Pampers!  I don't know what the difference is but Pampers are awesome.  Everyone I know uses Pampers and loves them!!

  • I'd suggest having others buy size 1 or 2 if they want to stock pile.  Keep in mind, most places will let you exchange for a different size as long as the package isn't opened.

For my newborn, I prefer Pampers Swadlers.  Those are SO much softer than any other diaper.  Once baby is a little bigger I switch to Luv's.  They are very similar to Huggies, super absorbant but not quite as pricy.  But, every baby is different, some diapers fit this baby great, and that baby not so much.  I never had any issues with anything, but I have known people who did have struggles with certain brands just not fitting their baby's body shape.

But, not a bad idea at all to start stocking up, I'm doing that myself!

  • Pampers gave DS a bad rash, and their newest formula is giving some children chemical burns.

We've used huggies and 7th generation w/o issue when we need to (we cloth diaper).  I hate the smell of huggies, though.  I'd go w/ 7th gen or another fragrance/ammonia-free diaper if you are stock piling.

  • For a newborn, I LOVED Pampers swaddlers, because they have this yellow line on the front that turns green when the baby is wet.  You will be, most likely, counting wet diapers when they are young, just to make sure they are eating enough, and that little line made it SO much easier to tell!

After he grew out of those, we liked Luvs, but they recently revamped their diapers and they leak for us every time now.  So we use target brand.

  • Kirkland brand by Costco. I worked at a daycare (with over 400 kids) and they were the least likely to leak, or having their tabs break off...and to me, they feel thinner.

My youngest nanny kid uses Pampers. I loved the Pampers Swaddlers (4 of my nanny kids used them up til size 2).....but other than the small sizes...I hate them. He gets changed right before they leave the house and comes to my house. I put him straight in the car to go to the main house that I work out of. If he has peed during that time, by the time I get to the other house (about 15min later) the pressure of the buckle between his legs on the carseat, pushes on the diaper and his clothes are wet right there. And they feel thin when I put them on him, but if he pees even a little bit, it feels like his diaper is going to explode. Anytime someone picks him up, they are always saying "Oh need has a full diaper, feels like he need to be changed.." even though I just changed him.

We are planning on using Pampers Swaddlers and then eventually moving into Kirkland brand.

The only diapers that have ever worked for DS have been Pampers. We've tried Huggies, 7th generation, Luvs and a couple of other brands. He leaked through all of them.

  • I use pampers....and now use the cruisers.  I don't like huggies, but Target brand diapers are pretty good.  I know people have mentioned Pampers giving kids burns, but I work in the #1 children's hospital in the country and we use pampers at work and I have never seen it happen.
  • I love love love Pampers! I've never had any issues with them and find that they hold the pee in for long periods of time! I don't like Huggies.

Oh and all of the hospitals here use Pampers as well.

  • When we delivered DS#1 they used Pampers at the hospital, so that's what we used for him through potty training and they worked great.  With DS#2, we started with Pampers but he was one of the kids that has a bad reaction to their new DryMax formulation.  His butt did look like it had been burned, so we switched to Huggies.  I don't think it was a massive conspiracy or anything...he's just a kiddo that has sensitive skin so they didn't work for him.

So I would say....both!  But as PP said...be careful with the NB size.  DS#2 was over 9 pounds so the newborns were already too small.

That's what I'm planning on using. I've read lots of great reviews about Seventh Generation. I hope they work well with my LO.

  • We used Pampers swaddlers then Pampers Cruisers.  However, last year pampers changed their diapers to make them thinner.  They must have ramped up the chemicals because DD got rash after rash from them.  Thankfully she was daytime trained when it happened and the overnights don't have the same problem.  I'm not sure what we'll do this time.  I did have good luck with Sam's Club Members mark once she got into size 3 (they combine size 1 and 2 and I'd heard bad things). We used those until she became too squirmy on the changing table.  Pampers were easier to close, but the Sam's club diapers always did the job fine.

We also used luv's.  Those were great and much cheaper than Pampers.  The only downside is that I didn't always have as much luck finding them.

On a related note, Sam's club wipes are awesome and way cheaper than the name brand wipes.  Pampers wipes irritated DD's skin.

  • With DD, I always preferred pampers, especially the newborn sizes. I loved the 'stripe' down the middle that turned green when she was wet. Now, we use huggies, purely because of price. When she was tiny, DD would always pee out the side of huggies and I hated them.

I agree. I used the Target ones and they worked well. I liked the pampers swaddlers when my kids were newborns.

  • We will be CDing but we will use Pampers swaddlers for newborn size.
  • I've been a nanny for families with children of different ages, and they've all used Pampers. I've gotten Huggies a few times when the store was out of their size in Pampers and I hated them! They felt like they had a piece of cardboard and they weren't as flexible. The kids never complained but it was a personal preference for me!

We are using Swaddlers (or Costco brand which my brother's family uses and I also like) for newborn and then switching to cloth! Good luck!

  • I've never even tried Huggies.  We started with Pampers (up through size 3) and then switched to Up & Up (Target brand).  LOVE them.
  • We used Pampers Drymax for a long time and they worked great, we recently started putting DS in pull-ups during hte day and I got up and up (target brand) and they are irritating his legs. When he was small we used swaddlers and I loved them, they were very soft and seemed to mold to him better.
