3rd Trimester

Does anyone feel like their heart pounds when you lie down?

This is a relatively new thing for me and I don't remember it with my daughter so I'm curious.  As soon as I put my head down I feel as though my heart is pounding and the place I feel it the most is the arteries in my neck.  I know no one here is a dr, and I am going to ask my dr at my appt in a few days, but just wondering if this has happened to anyone else.  Thanks

  • *raises hand* I do every time I lay down. Feels like my heart is going to jump right out of my chest for a couple minutes then it calms down. Not sure what is causing it, but I don't remember this from previous pregnancies either.

  • This definitely happens to me when I am in bed.  If I shift positions, it does get a little better, but it is usually pretty bad.  I find myself out of breath too.  If it gets really bad, I sit up and I feel better.

  • Happens to me periodically. I just figure the baby is putting pressure on whatever artery it is that's susceptible when you're on your back and roll onto my sides.

  • This happens to me so I avoid laying on my back with only one pillow.
  • I actually asked my OB about this at my appt last week and was told it's very normal.  She said that when you lay down, the baby and all your organs shift positions and tend to push up on your diaphragm and heart causing the racing feeling and potential discomfort.  She told me that if the baby tends to lay on one particular side of my belly (LO love love loves my right side!) that it's usually better if you lay on that side and it should help cut down on the racing/pounding heart issues.  It actually does work wonders for me!  Feel better!!

  • Yes. And I don't remember this with DS. And what jennkelley said makes sense. LO is on my right side and I don't feel the pounding as much as when I lay on my left.
