1st Trimester

Will you have a glass of wine? (I'm not judging :) )

I have heard a glass of wine with dinner once or twice a week is a non issue. What do you think?

  • Once I'm out of my first tri, I probably will once - twice a month.  I'm going to tend to go with the not-uptight and puritanical Europeans on this one.

  • Absolutely not.
  • I did not with DS and do not plan to with this pregnancy either.

I just feel that I know I am pregnant, so might as well not "mess" with something that might not be good.

And besides - i would want more than one glass!!!!!!

  • No alcohol for me for the whole pregnancy, but I am not judging you. If you want one then have one :)

  • I've had a baby. I've talked with my doctor and nurse about this. Everyone has to decide on their own. My stance:

Will I drink a glass of wine in the first or second trimesters when I know most of the baby's organs are being developed? No. Just my choice. Would I judge a woman who had one glass now and then? No.

Did I and will I have a glass of wine in the weeks leading up to the birth? Yes and yes. It was actually given to me as advice to do so by my doctor during my first pregnancy to have a glass at the end, because I needed to relax, I was stressed out. And it helped me, and all was fine.

There will always be those totally against it. And there will always be those who think like I do. You just have to decide for yourself what's best. Obviously I am not talking about drinking in excess!

This. We live near Napa and already have several wine club release events planned with visiting family & friends. I won't indulge (not even a half glass) but I might join the tasting so I can share the experience with everyone and know what I'm buying for our collection. DH is my tester. If it is worth buying, I taste it. (When I say taste; I mean wet my palate. Twice.)

My OB also recommended red wine during the 3rd trimester.

  • I had half a beer a couple nights ago.  I just kept staring at it... and staring at it... and staring at it.... for two nights, craving the damn thing.  Funny thing is that I hate beer.

That's about when I realized I was pregnant. (Still no BFP, but I KNOW.  And it sure seems like I had implantation bleeding last night, so here's to hoping for a BFP real soon.  DH thinks I'm crazy.)

    This Yes

  • My family is Portuguese and I can tell you more then half of the women drank a few glasses of wine during their pregnancies. All their children are perfect.

I on the other hand probably won't, I am the cheapest drunk.... Like one glass and I'm tipsy.

I don't think theres anything wrong with it as long as you are in the end of your 2nd tri or in your 3rd tri, as long as you aren't drinking the whole bottle one or two small glasses are fine.

Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • I won't. Not so much because I believe that a glass here or there will actually hurt the baby but because if something were to happen to the baby because of drinking, I don't think I could forgive myself.

  • I have had a sip or two of beer since finding out.  Never more than a sip or two...just a taste.

Maybe in my third trimester I might consider a half/full beer.  But not until later.  My concern is that the alcohol will deplete my body of other nutrients my baby needs.

  • I probably would wait until 3rd tri and not make it a once or twice weekly thing - maybe one glass.  I had a quarter of a pint of beer late in 3rd tri with my 1st pregnancy and it was delicious.  But that's all the alcohol I had during my entire pregnancy.  I wouldn't judge other moms who did it unless they were drinking a lot all throughout their pregnancy.

It always seems kind of ironic to me that people think a glass of wine in the third tri is a major deal, but are all about a drug cocktail for L&D.

There's a big difference between meds that are safe for the baby and drinking that can lead to FAS. I realize you're a natural birther but that "drug cocktail" and alcohol are apples and oranges.

  • Drinking a glass of wine or two towards the end of your pregnancy does NOT cause FAS. Do your research. Don't be ignorant and don't judge.

    Yes

I might have half a glass once or twice in the third trimester.  I LOVE wine.

  • I loooooove me some wine normally, and probably would tend towards being one of those who would have a glass in the third trimester but it sounds so incredibly horrible tasting to me now for some reason!

I guess I will see if that changes and I get my taste for it back.

  • Definitely not now, but perhaps I'll have the occasional glass once I'm out of the first tri.  Unfortunately, I find beer repulsive, and my DH is a beer drinker- so there's no chance of getting sips from his drink!

    This!

Below is a review of an article from a peer-reviewed research journal, and there's much more research out of Europe identifying the benefits of an occasional glass of red wine.

    https://news.discovery.com/human/alcohol-drinking-pregnant-women.html

Long-term, there's support that light drinking (1-3 glasses a week) in the latter part of pregnancy may be beneficial. Some research out of the UK suggests that mothers who have a couple glasses a week are less likely to have ADHD or behavioral issues with their kids.

I do think there needs to be more research on the immediate impacts. We know the L & D drugs impact the baby negatively in the short term (impacting heart rate, etc.), so it would be useful to know more about alcohol on the short term.

That being said, I'll probably enjoy a couple glasses later in my pregnancy!

  • I won't drink any alcohol throughout my pregnancy.

If other people want to, it's their choice, but I did a huge research paper on fetal alcohol syndrome last year, and that was more than enough to turn me off of the idea of having a drink while pregnant.

The way I see it is, it's just 9 months of my life away from alcohol, it won't kill me.

Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • no way. I wouldn't even think about it. It isn't the end of the world to give up alcohol for 9 months. Why even chance it?

I've always found this ironic, too!

I had a couple of glasses of wine during the 3rd tri with DS after really stressful events & each one was a god-send.  I'm not adverse to something like that again.

  • No way!!  A glass would do nothing there is no point in putting it in your body!

I have also heard the same thing, that a glass here and there is not a big deal.  But just remember that what is in your blood stream is also in your babys.  Just food for thought.

You must drink just to get drunk then? There are women out there who like red wine which is why they drink it- not to get tipsy. There is also no point to drinking soda so why put it in your body or eating a candy bar...yada yada yada. You get my point.

Not arguing with you but just saying your first point has a few holes.

You would be right.  I used to have a glass here and there with dinner but when I did drink (which was seldom) I got drunk.  I also do not drink soda and cut out caffeine completely.  I am not judging those who do indulge here and there in third tri, apparently it is okay, but it is not for me.   This was a question and I answered it.

As for the part in bold, there are a lot of things I "like"  but a few months of not having them is no big deal to me just for taste.

Whether or not the epi is safe is debatable.  It crosses the placenta and the effects on baby aren't well known.  Not really apples and oranges.

  • I am still debating this. I definitely will not any time soon as I am still just in the first trimester.  But, I suffered from extreme anxiety (suffered two m/c prior) in my pregnancy with DD to the point I was depressed.  I literally wasn't functioning-I just cried and didn't want to do anything, I was a terrible mess at work, etc.  I was terrified something was wrong with my baby.  I do not want to end up like that again.  I am suffering from anxiety again, but not as bad yet.  But I would rather have a small glass of wine on the rare ocassion than take an antidepressant daily.  So, if I get to that point of anxiety/depression, I will certainly talk to my ob and will probably have a little bit of wine.

We had this debate on my month board, and someone made a very good point: organizations, such as the March of Dimes or OBGYN organizations, have to take a black and white, extreme stand for issues of liability. So, they are only going to present the most conservative research. So, while the information's validity is not in question, you must realize it's an extreme position. Peer-reviewed research journals are going to have the most recent and more cutting edge research, because they are not as accessible to the general public.

That being said, I think it's a good thing. I am thrilled my cousin's wife only readily has access to sources like the March of Dimes, otherwise, she'd be the one who justifies drinking daily, based on skimming an article that suits her interests. However, being an educated person, who is trained in critically analyzing research, it's good to know that I can drink a glass of wine later in my pregnancy and not worry. Since I am doing homebirth, high blood pressure is the most common reason for women having to switch to a hospital birth--it's reassuring to know I can use a natural substance, red wine, to help regulate my blood pressure or stress, if needed.
