Trying to Get Pregnant

When to start Clomid?

I had a quick question about when it's generally time to consider using Clomid? I'm not sure if that falls under the waiting a year rule or if other people have started before then? I've been off BC for almost a year and my cycles are just getting worse and worse. The last time I had AF on my own was the beginning of Dec. and since then it's been two rounds of Provera. I don't want to jump the gun but at the same time I want to be proactive about TTC. TIA! Smile

First, have you been to an RE? Clomid use needs to be carefully monitored by an RE, and they can help you determine when and if that's the course to take.

This!  Please read the Clomid warning in my siggy.  If your OB is willing to monitor you at cd3 and 2-3 days post last pill, you don't necessairly need to see an RE.

  • No, I haven't been to an RE. My gyno mentioned Clomid to me last week when I was talking to her and I told her I would think about it. I'm not sure if she plans on prescribing me a smaller dose of it and monitoring me (As some gynos do) or referring me to an RE.

I'm more just trying to figure out if that's a road I want to take and if it's too early to go there or not.

  • Speaking from experience, I wouldn't waste my time with an OB who is prescribing you fertility drugs. I would take the RE referral.

    Good luck to you.

  • Has she done any b/w?  Did she tell you why Clomid?  Sometimes Clomid gets tossed out as a "cure all" type drug.  Has DH had an SA done?  As a couple you could have MFI issues.  You also could have progesterone issues.  There are so MANY possibilities, I would be leary of starting Clomid w/o more answers.

    Exactly this.

I stupidly allowed my OB to prescribe Clomid w/ monitoring and had two annovulatory cycles.
I went to an RE on my own, and found out that I basically wasted two cycles because I needed a higher dose of Clomid to start with.

As far as waiting a year or not, I suggest you do, UNLESS you have been charting for a while and know for a fact that you are not ovulating (which it looks like you've done). The number one thing to do is try to find out why you aren't ovulating, and that is some testing that you may or may not have had done. good luck

This is SO helpful...thank you!! I have been charting and it doesn't look I've ovulated since December (well my period start Dec. 1st so then I really ovulated in Nov.), so what WOULD the next step be for me? I want to talk to my gyno but I'd also like some advice about what the next steps are in getting help. Thank you ladies!

If you get an RE referral they will most likely start with CD 3 b/w. After those results they will move on from there. Clomid may or may not be in your protocol. If you've already been charting for a while and you know you are not ovulating then I would suggest getting an RE referral sooner rather than later. The wait time to get an initial appointment is quite long at some practices. Best of luck to you!
