June 2011 Moms

Sick pregnant women amongst us...

Long story short...  My medical offers "Stork Classes" (Basic preparation classes for newborn babies and new moms) for free & a program "Natural Childbirth Preparation" (The class that I really wanted to take) for a fee which I already paid for...

Just started the Stork Classes last week, and my husband was so upset because when we got there...  There are about 15 pregnant couples in the class, 3 of the pregnant women are SICK...  I mean with bags of halls cough drops on the tables, thick jackets, and boxes of kleenex.

Now...  I am sick.  I'm going in today because I possibly might have strep throat because my throat hurts so bad and I just keep spitting because I am producing all kinds of saliva!

Those sick pregnant women should've known better....  I just hope I'm the only one that got sick out of the whole group.  They just ruined it for me, and maybe I do just want a pity party...  But I now will be losing out on the opportunity to learn more about natural birth than reading books and on those fees for my second class because I don't want to be that sick mom that goes in to get everyone else sick.

I don't know what to do....  and I was really depending on this class to get my husband to learn more about labor/delivery and baby care....  =(

*cough, sniffle, tear*

Just so irritated!  Now what do I do??  Try to enjoy my solo pity party??  Or call the instructor and "explain" that it should be a rule in the class to NOT come to the class if you're sick?  (My husband's idea)

Re: Sick pregnant women amongst us...

  • That sucks big time!  I was sick the week before my birthing class started.  The weekend before my husband came down with it.  He told me that he thought he could make it to class that Monday. I told him no way in hell was I letting him go and expose all of those pregnant woman!  I was miserable for almost a week and I was not going to let those woman suffer!  So...he missed the first day of class!

  • Is this the only class offered before your due date?  If not, I'd just explain the situation to the instructors and see if they'd let you take a different day/session so that you don't have to miss out or be out the fee you already paid.  And, eventhough the other ladies came and got you sick....I'd advise making sure that you wash your hands and use hand sanitizer or something in the future.  I'm surrounded by sick kids all day, wiping noses and getting slobbered on...a little extra preventative hygiene goes a long way...Get some rest and I hope you feel better soon!

  • I am surprised at those women showing up sick. On our first class, a husband was missing because he was sick. I agree with PP that if you can make up the class you'd miss, the polite thing is to not go.  If you can't make up the class, just go but cover your mouth, be considerate about your tissues, etc.

Also, obsessive hand washing really does help.  At work this winter EVERYONE in my office was sick.  I think I honestly was the only of 30 people who didn't get the head cold they all had.  I think all my vitamins and hand-washing paid off.  FYI hand sanitizers don't eliminate all viruses; washing germs down the drain by scrubbing them off is the only way to really ensure you've gotten rid of them.

I can't believe people would do that.  We signed up for a breastfeeding class (that we paid for) and didn't go because I came down with a stomach virus and low grade fever the day before.  I wasn't so sick that we couldn't have gone, I just didn't want to spread sickness amongst pregnant ladies.  I think that's just common courtesy.

  • I feel for you.  I share an office with a woman who was very sick last week and shouldn't have been in.  I point blank asked her to go home because I'm pregnant and she said "she had too much to do".  I washed my hands constantly and tried to be out of the office as much as possible and bam this week I'm so sick (so are 4 other people in our office as well).  Now, I have a lot to do at work and I'm trying to get ready for my mat leave but I can't leave the house.

I wish people in general would think about staying home when they are sick.  I know it sucks to miss out on stuff or to feel like you have a lot to do, but you are sick, you're going to be a lot better off to get better and then do what you need to do.

We have a huge problem with this at my workplace and I'm quite sure that's how I got my stomach virus.  Plus, many people at my job travel all over the world and bring back flus from everywhere/illnesses from the recycled air on airplanes/etc.  About 3 years ago I got a flu from Japan that was vicious.

It's looked down upon if you use sick leave so people just keep coming in spreading it around, I really wish the culture would change.  I keep a bottle of spray Lysol in my office and spray everything down once a week and if someone is obviously sick and they bring work in I spray that as well.
