  • With all due respect to posters above, I have never, ever, ever heard it pronounced as Claire-uh. Everyone I know with this name pronounces it Clahr-uh. This includes Germans, Hispanics and Americans in New York (I specify New York because perhaps we're influenced by the high percentage of foreign-born residents?).

Hmmm... I disagree.  Even though I'm not in New York but in NJ, I've only ever heard it pronounced Claire-Uh. My parents and in-laws were all raised in NYC.

There are two Claras in my husband's family and they pronounce it "Clahr-ah" in Spanish and "Claire-uh" in English.

In the US I would pronounce it Claire-uh unless told otherwise.

  • I've only ever heard Clara like Lara with a "c" or like the beginning of the word "clarity."  I've never heard Clair-uh.  I grew up in PA and live in CA.
  • From most native English speakers I have heard it as Claire-uh.  From non-native English speakers it is clahr-uh.  In German it's clahr-uh.
