SAHM's- when did DC start pre-school?

Pre-schools in my area have wait lists, so I need to start scoping things out now.  DS was born in April and pre-schools start in September, so he'd be 2.5 next fall and 3.5 the following fall.  I feel like 2.5 is too young for preschool, but I'm not even really sure?  When did your DC start pre-school?  I'm asking SAHM's since he would only go a couple of mornings a week- not full time.

Re: SAHM's- when did DC start pre-school?

  • The schools in MA have an age limit of 2.9 years.  Younger then that they can't get into preschools.  My son missed the cutoff so he's one of the older ones in his class, he will be four in february.  He has done really well in school, is learning a lot and its been good for him.  I'm not technically a SAHM b/c I work two days a week.  But the days I work he is home with my mom so he's never been in a daycare situation etc.  My son goes three mornings a week, three hours each time.

  • Eric started preschool last fall at 2.5 yrs old. ?He was potty-trained and very ready for a school environment. ?He only goes two mornings a week and I won't increase him to 3 mornings a week until next year.

  • Michelle started a 2 yr old program in Sept.  We dont have a problem with waiting list and stuff but then again most of the preschools are run by church groups.  Mine is not religious based...it just run out of the church.

  • DS will start pre-school at 3. I think any younger for him would be to young. He will attend a school structured MDO 2x a week until pre-school starts.

I think everyone has different opinions on it. For me I think 2.5 is to young. Unless of course they are bored out of their mind with you. Emilia may start earlier but she seems to be more school oriented.

  • This has been very interesting- thank you!

Marchbaby- we're actually in MA as well- I had no idea on the 2.9 thing, so I guess that decides it for us!  He will have to wait until he's 3.5.

  • I think it is different for every kid.  DD started when she was two (two mornings a week) and did really well with it.  She is now three and doing three mornings a week.  DS might not start when he is two, I just don't see him being ready but that may change.
  • I am hoping to start DS when he is 2, 2 mornings a week.  That is provided I can find something that starts that young.

  • Pre-schools in my area dont allow kids to attend unless they are 3 by sept 1st (much like having to be 5 by sept 1st for kindergarten). So, we didnt have a choice to start earlier than age 3. Luckily, DD met the cutoff by a month, otherwise we'd have to have waited until she was 4 to start.?
  • DD just started preschool two days a week this fall at 3 1/2 (her birthday is in January). I considered putting her in last fall at 2 1/2, but I'm glad I didn't. I just don't think 3 years of preschool is necessary. I doubt 2 years is necessary either, but it is nice for the socialization.

  • My DS started this past September, he was 18 months old and he's in the 1's class.  He goes 2 mornings a week, and really seems to be enjoying it.  He's always saying "schooool" and has adjusted well.

  • DD just started 1 day a week at 29 months.  She really likes it, but she also really likes the other things we do, so I don't want to send her more than 1 day a week until I have too, at 4.  I just need the time for me to go to doctors appointments with this second kid, I don't think it is a super benefit to her.   The program she goes to is very small, only 18 kids from 1 to 4, with 4 teachers in 2 classrooms, which I really like because there are fewer sick kids than at a bigger school and it is very flexible based on the kids needs.  DD just got moved to the 3 and 4 year old class because she is bored in the 1 and 2 year old class, which will give her a chance to do more crafts, stories, ect.
  • We're in MA too, and every school I've looked at has the 2.9 rule also.  Kate will start when she's 3.4 (she was born in May).  I've also been looking at schools around here and the admissions process starts one year out, so we'll start it next fall for fall 2010 attendance.
  • I'm a WAHM so my situation is a little different.  DD#1 started a MDO program (9am-2pm, two days a week) at 15 months.  Technically the class was for 18 months and up, but they weren't full so they let her and my friend's DS in.  This year, she started what I would consider more "preschool" still two days a week, same hours.  She loves it and it gives me time to work while she's there (assuming DD#2 lets me).  The program she's in now, still keeps the 2yo separate for most things and they don't do a lot of the school-wide parties, parades, etc. because they're during naptime and the kids aren't ready, but they're working them upto that by the end of the day.
  • Here preschool is only for 3 or 4 yo's.  DD will start when she is 4 - almost 5.  I prefer for her not to have years of school before it is mandatory.
  • I guess it depends on what YOU consider a preschool :).  My DD is starting hers tomorrow, and she just turned 2.  I work part-time, so she only goes Mondays and Fridays.  Her teacher has a book with appropriate learning material for her age group.  With that being said, it is available year round from 7AM-6PM and that's why many people would consider it a daycare.  She will start an actual school (pre-k) at 4 since next year she will miss the cutoff by a month.

  • She missed the cutoff here by a couple weeks so she started regular preschool at almost 4.  But I wanted her to start earlier so the year before she did MDO for a semester (1 morning a week) & then a Young 3s (2mornings a week) for the next semester.  Now she goes 5 mornings a week.  She was totally ready.
