Gross motor skills delay anyone??

I am starting to feel like baby is really behind in her large motor skills. She seems to have good eye/ hand control, but she sits and reaches only. No crawling, no rolling, no pulling up, and she still hates being on her tummy. She will be 10months in a week Eta she can roll from belly to back just fine but since she doesn't lime being on her tummy she doesn't roll back to front much. I meant rolling as in from one part of the room to the next.

  • SHe doesn't roll either way at 10 months???  That might be somewhat concerning. Mine dind't roll from back to belly until about then but they were preemies so they were behing.  Have you talked to your pedi/consider an EI evaluation?

  • Sounds just like my son. He was the same around 9 months...and I brought it up at our pedi appt.  She recommended him to be evaluated and he qualified for Early Intervention.  Early Intervention has been wonderful.  They come once a week and work with him- showing me things to try as well.  He was crawling by 10 months and creeping by 12.  After he hit 12 months, he seemed to "take a break."  He is now being seen again for walking.  He is finally walking at 16 months!!

Good luck...nothing to worry about...EI can totally help.  She'll be crawling in no time :)

  • I agree with PP's.  Talk to your pedi and see if you can get someone from Early Intervention in to do an evaluation.  Both my kids are still getting it.  Ds was way behind in gross and fine motor skills and EI did wonders for him.  We hope DD will test out in May and DS not soon after.

  • James had gross motor delays. He pulled to stand briefly at 10 months (which was considered fine), but then stopped and didn't restart till 13 months.

When he wasn't pulling to stand at 10 months, he didn't qualify for EI. When he wasn't at 13 months, he did.

He didn't walk till 17 months and he may  still be somewhat behind because he doesn't jump yet. He is also still getting verbal therapy.

I wouldn't be too worried yet in your case, especially since she is sitting, but it can't hurt to talk to your pedi and get an evaluation just in case.

  • Yup. Ethan was army crawling at 10 months, pulled to stand at 13 months, regular crawling at 13 months and still not walking at 18 months (although he's really close!) He's been in PT since 12 months.

  • DD rolled both ways pretty early; however, she didn't crawl until 10 months (and the pedi reminded me that some babies skip crawling, although my OT friend kept telling me to encourage it :) ) She didn't hands and knees crawl until even a bit later I think (it's all getting fuzzy :( )

She didn't pull up or cruise furniture until around 12-13 months and she didn't walk until 18 months. She just started (at 21.5 months) climbing furniture and she's still not the most coordinated child.

I think she is a bit delayed compared to her peers, but my SIL is an OT and has commented many times about her upper and lower body strength. I'm going to ask the pedi about it again at her 2 year appointment, but so far he hasn't been concerned (I've brought it up every time).

It never hurts to ask, but it really might just be normal for her.

  • DS was slowish with gross motor and I was always close to calling EI, but then he'd suddenly do it. He rolled at 9.5/10 months, crawled and pulled up at 10.5 months and just started cruising. Nowhere near walking yet. I try very hard not to compare and instead focus on the ranges for normal. Definitely see about an IE assessment if she doesn't look like she's making gains within what is considered normal timeframes.

ETA: I'm a PT and we do tons of 'home rehab' with him, so I'm sure that has helped!
  • Your DD sounds just like my DD.  She loves to sit and reach, and only within the last month has she started leaning forward and getting to her tummy from a sitting position.  Occasionally she ends up on her hands and knees, but if I try to get her to crawl, she just does a face plant.  She still doesn't pull to stand and can't get herself to a sitting position.  She was late to roll, but now does roll to get around - or she will slide around on the hard wood floors on her belly.

She LOVES to stand, though.  If she had her way, she would be holding my hands and walking around all day.  This is a fairly new development - like in the last 2 weeks or so.

I brought up the lack of crawling, pulling to stand, etc at DD's 9 month appt, and her pedi was unconcerned.  Like a pp, she said maybe she will just skip crawling.  I have friends that are OTs/PTs and they say that crawling is important, so I have been trying to get her to, but I just don't see it happening!

I am hoping that by 12 months, she will have caught up!
