Do you make a separate dinner for LO?

The subject says it all- do you give Lo what you are having or do you make them something separate?

I find I'm cooking dinner around the time L wants dinner so usually I give some of what is made but his main dish is usually different from what dh and I eat...weird?normal?

Re: Do you make a separate dinner for LO?

  • Usually every other night I make one dish and sometimes alter it slightly for the kids...like they will eat baked ziti but if I make tacos or fajitas - then I make the kids quesadillas because it's easier for them to eat.

The other nights I'll makes them things like banana pancakes or frozen raviolis and DH and I will have something adultish - like steak or fish.

  • When R was learning to eat foods, I didn't give him things like tacos, burgers, or stir fry...but now he eats 90% of what we (er, I....dh is never home for dinner) eat.

I will often toss something on his plate I know he will like, but he also gets what we are having. Last night was stuffed pork chops, roasted sweet potatoes and homemade mac n cheese....he also got an applesauce cup.

He loves spicy stuff too, which is awesome. Our ped said to throw him anything and everything now and he will be a better eater later. I don't make him anything if he doesn't eat what we are having, but I might give him a fruit/veggie pouch if he didn't eat any (which is rare).

  • Normal, but everyone has their own opinion.  I make diff dinners for each kid and then a separate dinner for the adults.  Sometimes my 4 year old eats what we do, but seriously - goat cheese stuffed mushrooms?  no.  Scalloped potatoes with gruyere?  Prob not.  Long list of stuff.  And she has a tough time with stuff like string beans because they are stringy, and that's fine.  As long as she has her own veggies or fruits with each meal, I'm happy.  Yet, she has a good variety of foods and even likes spicy stuff, so she gets a big variety, but generally does not eat our exact meals.

I got into it with someone and DH recently because DD wanted edamame for dinner, but the two guys told me no, she's eating what we're having.  And I think it was mushrooms and something else.. I mean if the girl wants edamame, she can have it.  DH is always saying not to cook a separate meal, but he's not the ones responsible for what the kids eat or even really knows their diet, so as long as I'm fine doing it, I don't know why it shouldn't be an issue..

  • Both.  Brianna mostly eats and likes what we eat.  I think it depends on what you like to eat and what he likes to eat.  It also depends on how many teeth he has, and there is the whole mess factor.

Tyler just cannot eat what we eat, but that is a whole separate issue.

  • Evan eats what we eat 99% of the time. I try and plan our meals to include something he'll like. He always surprises me, and whenever I make something and think "oh, Evan will never eat this", he will clean his entire plate. We had steaks last week for DH's birthday, and Evan ate a ton. He also likes fish, shrimp, pork, ground beef/turkey, sometimes chicken, most veggies and any type of pasta or anything w/ cheese! So, he's pretty easy to please!
  • It depends on what we are having, and the way L is feeling that day.  He's going through that stage where one day he'll eat a banana and the next it's the grossest thing he has ever put in his mouth.  Makes things interesting that's for sure.
  • The majority of the time DD eats what we eat.  Sometimes it's a more healthified version (like if we have bacon or something, she doesn't get that).  And she usually has fruit with dinner each night.  Luckily, right now, she likes pretty much everything, including meat & fish.  I don't want to get in the habit of having to make different dinners for her, but it may come to that when she's a picky older toddler.  I'll just roll with it I guess but I'd like to avoid it if possible.

  • Nope. My 2 year old eats what we eat. If he doesn't care for it, there is always enough fruits or veggies as side dishes, so he gets plenty of food. We are lucky that he is not a picky eater. The only thing he will absolutely not eat is eggs. I don't push it.

  • I sometimes make my lovie something different if I think it's too messy for him, or if he has a hard time with it. Like tacos, fajitas, homemade subs those he doesn't quite get yet. He is two btw. I wasn't giving him soup though because I thought he would just throw it but my grandma feeds him her homemade soup and he eats it all up! So sometimes it's a trial and error thing.

  • I like to say that I don't cook separate meals but that's a big lie!  I seem to all the time and it drives me nuts!!  My boys will only eat a few things my dh and I eat and it isn't even like we eat weird meals.  I know I need to put a stop to this and just make one meal.  I don't think they'll starve.

  • YUP.  I can't deal, but Owen eats like 8 foods.  And after the stomach bug 3 weeks ago, he eats like 3 foods.  I know people say just give them what you are having, but he has never eaten those foods, we always offer, and he gags, cries and throws the food on the floor (ISSUES).  He still only eats veggies if they are pureed.  Plus he has allergies.  Mia, on the other hand, eats modified what we eat.  Gotta love it.  Oh, and DH is the worst one of all.  UGH.

  • I don't ever make anything seperate for her.  She gets offered what we have for dinner.  If I don't feel she has eaten enough I will offer her some of the go-to stuff she likes that I don't have to make - cheese, frozen veggies, yogurt.  A couple days ago I gave her a big spoonful of peanut butter bc I felt like all she had eaten was pasta and veggies.  I feel like she is too skinny (she really isn't, but she is so tall that she looks skinny to me) so I don't like it if she hasn't eaten much.  But I don't want to turn it into a battle in the future, so I try to be kind of firm.  Like yesterday I made her eat a bite of pulled pork for each sweet potato fry I gave her.  DD on the other hand does not put up with it on his days.  If she doesn't eat, well then meal time is over.
  • Nope...he eats what we eat....salmon, reubens, veggie burgers, edaname, spicy food, etc...all of it.  If for some reason I do not think that he has had enough, I will give him a slice a cheese or something else like that, but that rarely happens.

  • We've always done BLWing and we're at the point where Stella pretty much eats what we eat. Sometimes I have to swap in something easier for her, but I don't make her a completely different meal. Like last night we had steak and a salad, she can't really handle a salad yet so she had steak and broccoli.
