NSAHM related, but I am at my witts end and need advice..

Hi Ladies

I haven't been on in months and months, but am honestly looking for ANY advice out there. My 9 month old, is all of the sudden miserable. When I say miserable, I mean, he is MISERABLE and screaming close to 80% of the time that he is awake.  He wants to be held all the time, by my husband and I, and only when we are standing.

A little backstory-he was born 4 weeks premature, had lung and breathing issues at birth, and then had colic until December-ish. He has been fine and non-colicky from that point, until about 2-3 weeks ago. At first, we thought maybe he had an ear infection, brought him in, and that's a definite no. Then, I brought him back in again to the pedi, thinking SOMETHING had to be wrong, and she did a big time thorough exam, and it is "nothing". I don't know what to do? I can NOT re-live those colicky months all over again-it's beyond exhausting, and my toddler is even covering his ears all the time. Has ANYONE experienced anything like this? Anyone have tips or any advice? I honestly don't know what the heck to do??? TIA

  • This is a total shot in the dark, but could he be cutting an extremely painful tooth?  That would explain the recent onset of the fussiness...

Sorry, that's all I can come up with!  I hope you figure out what's going on soon, a fussy/screaming kiddo is NOT easy to handle day in and day out.

  • I was thinking teething, too.

Have you tried giving tylenol or ibuprofen to see if it helps?  That's usually what I do when I've ruled everything else out (hunger, tummy troubles, etc).  Sometimes it helps.

  • Poor you!

I would also assume it's teething-related.  My daughter's 1 yr molars came in early and she was a mess for about a week.  Unfortunately, we never really know what's wrong w/ these kids until it's almost over.

Could it be a a cold?  I know I woke up this morning sounding fine but my head and sinuses were about to explode.  I was pretty miserable with a whopping headache.

    Is he constipated?

I would certainly try a little motrin.  If it's teeth or a cold that might help.  If he's constipated maybe slip him a little juice or 1/2 a suppository.

  • I have to agree with the other ladies. It's probably teething.  Some babies just get a painful teething experience, and some (Like my kids) you wouldn't know they were until you see a tooth in their mouth.  I would feel around his gums and see if you feel something. Maybe offer him a cleaned, cold, damp rag with an ice cube in it and see if that helps. If not, there's always Orajel for babies.

  • I wish it was teething! The pedi did a check at his mouth, and he already has a bunch of teeth, and she said there is nothing that is even remotely close to coming in, so I really don't think that's it. I have no clue what it is, but I'm just exhausted.

I wouldn't discount teething, anyway.  My pedi always tells me that it is extremely difficult to tell if teething could be causing pain until the gum is RIGHT underneath the gum line.

I really believe that just the process of the tooth moving through the gum can be painful.  Jackson is very, very sensitive to teething and usually he starts freaking out 2 or 3 weeks before the tooth even feels like it's about to pop through.

I would try giving ibuprofen (just once, won't hurt) to see if that appears to help him... at least that way you'll know if it's a pain thing or not.

Also might want to try getting him a baltic amber teething necklace.  I, personally, don't believe in them but I have several friends who SWEAR they help their babies with teething.

  • Could it be a food allergy?  He could be having stomach pain due to a food intolerance.

  • Good to see you again.  Sorry you are having a rough time.  Another shot in the dark - could it be sensory related?  Is he really easily over loaded from sights, sounds, movement & such?
  • Sorry to hear about your DS, I would definitely think something is wrong, too.  here are my random ideas:

     (1) Try Tylenol or ibuprofen, if it helps you know its pain related - next is identifying where the pain is and whats causing it.

    (2) Now that weather is changing, could your DS have newly triggered allergies or asthma?  A steamy shower/bathroom can help relief sinus pressure in babies.

    (3) A sinus infection?  My DS was diagnosed with a sinus infection without a runny nose a week after a cold, he was cranky and had dark-pinkish circles under his eyes.  It was a  bit of a guess on my pedis part but in two days he was a new kid.

    (3)  Could he have acid reflux disease, though I acknowledge its weird for it to present now and not previously?

    (4) Did you recently start solids or table foods?  Maybe constipated?  Maybe hungry but has an aversion to the new foods and won't eat it all?

    (5) Does he appear to have any teeth coming in?  DS bottom molars kept him cranky for a week and the top ones are taking their sweet time, making for a few bad days here and there.

    (6) Sleep/nap issues?  Every kid is different but, my DS was taking two naps a day for 1 - 2 hours apiece at that age then sleeping from appx. 7:00 pm to 6:00 am at that age.

Those are my random FWIW thoughts, I hope you figure it out soon.  Hang in there!

  • Thanks ladies. I'm going to try pretty much everything mentioned-hell, what do I have to lose?! We did give him Tylenol a week or so ago and that did nothing, so I don't 'think' it's pain related? Since day one, he has just been sooooo polar opposite from my first-who is quite possibly the easiest child ever, so at times I feel like he is my first baby you know?

I will let you know if/when we figure out what the heck it is. Thanks for the advice, and if you have any more I'll gladly take it!

  • Did the dr take some blodd and check the white blood cell count?
  • Have you considered food allergy issues-- like dairy/soy that causes gi distress?

I would invest in an Ergo and put him on your back when your arms need a rest and/or you need to get something done around the house.

ETA: what are your mommy spidey senses telling you?  Ear issue, tummy issue, teething, just needs comforting?  More times than I can count- I have been in situations where my instincts say something is wrong, but pedi says everything is fine... every time I have later found there WAS something wrong and my instincts were right.

  • I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. :(

I wonder if any of it could be separation anxiety? my daughter drove me CRAZY at 8-10 mos old because she constantly wanted to be held. I would stand at the sink trying to do dishes with her latched on my leg and screaming. she would follow me around fussing and whining and screaming if i wasn't holding her.

Try ibuprofen.  Tylenol does nothing for my LO.

So sorry I have no advice but I was wondering where you ran off to!  Glad to see you on here again.

  • I had this problem around 6-7 months. He didn't want to be anywhere but in my arms. And standing was preferable. I nearly died! He grew out of it. Hope that is all it is. And teething is really hard to tell. He would pop them out of now where now he has 20+ teeth  before a year old. I feel your pain. Good luck!

  • Ditto to PP...if it is teething related, infant ibuprofen might help whereas infant tylenol might not. Ibuprofen helps reduce swelling and inflammation more than acetominophen, so that is why it usually helps with teething more.)

Same here. I'd definately give the Ibuprofen a try.
