Soothies pacifiers?

The post below about NB survival kit made me wonder about soothies. Are they better for BF babies? We havent introduced a paci yet because DS is still working on a good latch but im wondering about these. We did try another kind in the beginning but it made him gag :(

  • I can only speak for my BF baby - but yes, she will only take a Soothie pacifier.  We"ve tried several others and she just spits them out.

  • My son won't take it, but it's the only one we've tried so who knows if it's the paci altogether or just the Soothies one.
  • Kay only took soothies for awhile and now she'll only take Nuk... picky lil' thing.

This. The soothies are the only ones she'll take.

  • My bf baby will not take a soothie.  She's an Avent baby.
  • Our LC recommended that we use Soothies. DS won't take anything else.

    this!!

  • Ella only takes soothies, and most of the time, she won't even take that.

I've tried Avent and Nuk but she has no desire to take a pacifier.

  • My LO will take a mam pacifier, but she prefers the soothies for sure.  The wouldn't even consider the nuks.  Hated them!  She might start liking them later, but right now we mainly use soothies.

  • Our LO takes the mam like a champ. Didn't bother trying anything else and haven't had any issues with bf'ing.
  • I think the notion that there is a better pacifier or bottle for BF babies is a load of crap.  Try a few different ones (with different shaped nipples) and see what your baby likes.  That's about it.

If you want to get technical, the pacis/nipples with a flat shape (like MAM) mimick most closely what happens to the breast when breastfeeding.  Not the Soothie shape (round).  So there you go.

  • breastfed babies take soothies easier because the shape of the nipple.

Soothie pacifiers have a longer skinnier nipple (like the breast) and regular pacifiers have a shorter fatter nipple (like a bottle)

Both my kids only took soothie. I bought one of every brand and they spit or gag on every other kind but soothie.

Side note: DD took soothie from birth with no nipple confusion but decided at 4 months old she didn't want a paci. Just because you start something in the beginning doesn't mean you have created a habit. DS currently sucks on soothies but who knows if he will be a paci kid.

  • My EBF DD doesn't like the soothie pacifiers. (which I can understand, they seem so huge!) She loves the NUK pacifiers though.

This for us too. However avent and the wubanub soothies are the only ones he can keep in his mouth on his own, the Nuks and Mams fall right out.
