Parenting after a Loss

Rotating frozen BM - FAIL

Wah!  Last night I did some laundry and grabbed a gallon bag (filled with a week worth of BM) out of the deep freezer to bring upstairs.  When I was in the shower this morning I realized that I left it downstairs all night.  Suck!  I thought about counting how many oz I had to toss, but I just couldn't do it.

Sad

  • Oh man...I'm so sorry!!  Were they in a cool place?  Could you at least use one of the bags that defrosted today since it's within 24 hours?  I feel your pain.  That freezer stash is priceless!

  • Oh no!  I once dropped a 5oz bag immediately after pumping and started crying.  I'd probably need a day of recovery if I had to dump and entire gallon.  I'm so sorry!

Yes, it's cool in the basement.  Three bags were still frozen - I think they were each 4 oz.  The rest (probably 8 bags or so) were all thawed/partially thawed and I didn't feel comfortable keeping them.

Bummer...At least you were able to save a few bags :(  Could you use the partially thawed bags today within the 24 hours and then pump instead of nursing during the sessions when you give her those to replace them?  Just ignore me if I'm sounding crazy, I just know if it were me I'd be doing anything to save as much as I could (without risking her drinking bad milk, of course).  It sounds like they might still be good if they aren't fully thawed yet and it was cool in your basement...

You're not crazy - I thought about that, but I already had bottles prepped.  They are in the trash already.

  • That really sucks.

When I was still BF'ing and having troubles, I spent 30 minutes pumping 1 oz. (really) and set it on the kitchen counter.  Very shortly after, my sleep deprived self poured it down the drain when I was cleaning bottles.  I could have killed myself!

  • Oh no, that stinks. I'm glad you were able to save a few bags. Losing BM is the worst. I had to throw out hundreds of ounces because I had to go soy and dairy free and I couldn't give her the BM from before the switch. It was horrible.

  • I was putting milk in the freezer a couple months ago, and apparently dropped a bag.  I didn't realize it until the next time I put milk in the freezer.  So, a 6 ounce bag was on the floor for about 3 days.  I didn't open the bag, but put it straight in the trash.  I'm sure it wouldn't have been pleasant!

FWIW, I'm on the verge of throwing out about 2 months worth of milk (September & October milk) and it's going to make me cry too.  That was a ton of work, and a lot of milk!

  • Crying  Totally feel your pain.  If I had to deal with a loss as great as your's...I would need to use some bereavement time at work.  At least 3 days.

The nanny once put a bag with 3 ounces left in it in the diaper bag....did not seal the bag completely and it was all over the bottom of the bag.  I wasn't sad that the bag was now a mess...I was so upset that 3 ounces was wasted!

  • HUGS to you after that! I have to pump & dump for 48 hrs after my ct scan...should I cry now or then?
