So, I tried to introduce the sippy cup to DD last night. She held it in her hand and just kept shaking it and then threw it. I sent it to the babysitters with her today so she could get used to it being around. She did the exact same thing. Neither time did she attempt to put it in her mouth (at least the part you are supposed to) to possibly drink from it. Is this the normal beginning of introducing the sippy cup or does this mean she is not ready? Do I keep giving it to her every day on and off? What did you do and how did your LO react at first? How old was you LO when they started using the sippy cup correctly?
TIA
Re: Introducing the Sippy Cup....help please!
I would continue to try to introduce it.
My DD takes it pretty well (even if half the time she misses her mouth. Her hand/eye is not the best) and the first few times I gave it to her, I did it without the leak proof inner thingamajig(so technical!), so that when I put the drinking part to her mouth actual liquid would come out without her having to suck or put in any effort. Now she just seems to know and sucks on it pretty well.
I only give it to her during solids at night with a little bit of water.
No.. my DD refuses to. She mostly just pushes the bottle out of her mouth. So I don't think that is any indication. She just doesn't know what the sippy is yet.
Also, we use the NUK sippy that has a soft silicone drinking tip so it feels similar to a bottle in her mouth instead of one of the hard plastic ones. We'll move on to those later but just to get her started I thought the soft one would be best.
OK, yes I am using the NUK sippy for that reason too. I will just have to keep working with her. How long did it take for your LO to get the hang? Or was it immediate?
Well, she does drink little bits of water from a regular cup when I let her. But I was trying to let her get the hang of holding a sippy so she can learn how to hold a cup and get a drink herself. Should I not be doing that?
I'd say it was 3-4 times before she realized there was liquid in there. I also started with a bit of formula so she'd recognize the flavor. it was probably 6-7 times before she started picking it up and putting it to her own mouth without me helping her. I'm still waiting to see when she won't throw it anymore... I'll let you know if that ever happens
This one worked for us because DS can chew on it and the liquid comes out. Once he realized that, he started sucking on it.
