Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How old was your LO when their speech really took off?

My daughter is 17.5 months and she says maybe 10 words. Sometimes she'll say a new word all day and then I'll never hear it again. She understands what I'm saying and will following instructions, and she has her own little language. She hardly ever repeats after us even if it's words she knows. I don't know if she's just shy...

How old was your LO when their speech really took off? I know every child is different I was just wondering.

  • My first son was over 2 before he started talking. He only said 3 words at 2. Even now he doesn't talk in sentences and still says a lot of babyish words.

  • Honestly in about the last month her speech has taken off. She got ear tubes recently and I am convinced before she couldn't really hear very well and that is why she is doing so much better now.
  • DS is 18 months and in the last month, his vocabulary has doubled or tripled! A month ago he was saying maybe 10 words and now he uses about 25-30 on his own and can repeat back twice that many. It's nuts how fast they take off!
  • I would say he went from a few words to a few dozen around 18 months. In the last few weeks he learns a few new words every day. He is picking up words like crazy now and will usually repeat words we teach him very clearly. Before it was more of his own language, but he is starting to get better at pronunciation very quickly.
  • There were two big explosions - around 19- 20 months he went from maybe 15 words to 75+ in like a month.  He kept adding new words and started stringing together phrases after that.  Then maybe a month before he was 2 1/2 all of the sudden he was talking non-stop, in full sentences and correctly using I, me, mine, yours, his, hers, etc etc instead of referring to everyone by their proper name (including himself).

  • Around 23 months. I was getting concerned but it literally happened over night and he is right on track developmentally according to our pedi.

  • DD's vocabulary started really exploding around 18 months... she started putting 2 words together around then as well. In the last month or so she has really started repeating everything and using 2-3 word phrases more consistently.

  • I think it was around 14-15 months, but since her 18 month appt she has had a word explosion!  At her 18 month 2 weeks ago appt she was saying almost 50 words and learning about 2-3 new words per week.  Over the last 2 weeks she has learned about 5-7 new words per week.

  • DD started speaking early and then seemed to totally stall around 14 or 15 mo and wasn't learning any new words and seemed to no longer say some words she used to know. She had a word explosion around 18 mo and was suddenly saying a lot of new words and talking a lot more. She started understanding directions better too. She had another word explostion starting about a month ago and is using a lot of short phrases and able to repeat about anything now. Its so nice to feel like I can finally communicate with her and its really helping to curb the tantrums.

  • 18 months. Before that he only had a few words, then the verbal explosion came.

  • 2.5ish.  He was a late talker
  • Mia had about 15-20 words at 1 year, maybe 50-75 at 18 months.  She's right now going through a HUGE speech explosion.  I'd say she has maybe 150 words now and she's telling me new ones every single day.

I've heard that the explosion comes anywhere from 20-28 months...somewhere in the range of about 2 years.

  • Started saying several words by 15 months, and now at almost 18 months DD's vocabulary is really expanding.
  • This all makes me feel better.  Ophelia is 15 months and her best bud is 18 months.  It's hard not to compare as the girls are the same size and Ophelia is even more physical.  Her buddy is saying phrases like "Bear book Daddy read please" but Ophelia only has individual words.  I feel a lot better for having read all these responses!

  • DD's speech took off very early. At her 15 month appointment, she could consistently say about 12 words. She talks and sometimes makes sense ALL the time now at 16 months old. The pedi said she was very advanced in her speech though.
