Do you have a portable/travel potty?

We are off to New York for 2+ months (from the west coast).  From our last "trip" there, I found that not all of the parks had bathrooms (close by or open) and obviously we did a lot of walking and it's not always convenient to go into a store/restaurant with 2 kids and a double stroller.  And, now my younger DD is in the midst of potty training.  Sooooo, do you have a travel potty/which brand?  Is it useful and easy to use?  Is it small enough to store in the basket of a double stroller?

Thanks!

  • Yes, we have this one:

I love it because it folds flat and the baggies that it uses have an absorbant  pad in the bottom so pee doesn't slosh out before you can dump it.  It's been a lifesaver for me.

  • Where would you put it to let your dc use the potty in NYC? It would be inappropriate in public, especially NYC.

I don't have one buy my best friend does. She keeps it in the car and has a 3rd row SUV that when her girls have to use it she puts it on the floor of her 3rd row in the back of her SUV and they use it.

  • I had the plastic Ikea one (I also had one I got at the dollar store that was even better).  I would throw it into a plastic bag with a draw string, like a gap bag and tie it to the handle.  I put a zip lock with Clorox wipes inside the bag.  Easy.
  • we use the little bjorn for car trips.  when we go into manhattan I usually plan to be somewhere with a bathroom mid day and force everyone to go potty then.  when dc were in early potty stages, I put them in either pull ups for the cloth version.

also, check out sitorsquat.com to find a toilet.  they have a mobile app too.

Much better to have your toddler pee on the ground while you look for a Starbucks?  That would be so much more "appropriate Embarrassed   BTW, Starbucks lets you use the bathroom even if your not a customer.  It was practically the only place I could find a public toilet in NYC that I didn't have to pay for it.  (Yes, I regularly go to Starbucks, so I was not taking advantage, just had to pee a lot when out and about and that is hard to do in NYC.  I have never been to a town where it was so hard to find a flipping bathroom)

I will definitely read up on proper NYC etiquette before I get there ;-)

  • honestly, I don't know of many places you could pull over and let them use a pot or squat in grass.  there are bathrooms all over the place.  use the sitorsquat app.

what type of stroller do you have.  it is difficult to get around with doubles.  we have a phil and ted and it's great for in the city .. but single or double can be tricky. if you're going with another adult, I'd opt for two umbrella strollers (easier to close to get to the subway)... if just you and you can still carry the little one, I'd go for an infant carrier and a single umbrella.  my dh hates to use the stroller on the subway.  he'd rather carry the kids. we have though.  just look up the subway site to look for stops with elevators.  not all stops have elevators.  to me, that's more tricky than finding a bathroom.

Seriously, you are going to take this potty out, pull down your kids pants and let him pee in public in NYC? I would NOT do that as there aren't any private places in the city to do this. If you had a car and can be discreet than that would be different. Who the heck would want to lug around a portable potty on their stroller in NYC? I go there all the time as I use to live there, still have friends there and still live close by. If my child could not hold herself for long periods than I would put a Pull-up on her to make sure there were no accidents and find a bathroom to change her in. I also make my child go to the bathroom when we are around a potty so that this isn't an issue.
