Have you road tripped it with your kiddo?

I know this has been asked before, but my phone doesn't let me search on the bump :( and to be honest, I never read the road trip posts before, because, well...I don't do road trips. However this weekend I am going to visit my brother in Tenn, which is about a 5-6 hour drive for us. I am going with my parents and leaving DH at home, because he is a big party pooper and doesn't want to come. Anyway, do you guys have any tips to make things go smoothly? He usually does good in the car, especially know that he is in a big boy car seat. We have never been in the car for more than an hour with him, so I am a little nervous. Thanks

  • We've done a couple road trips with Jack. He usually sleeps most of the way. I sit in the back with him and keep him entertained with toys and books while he is awake. He'll probably suprise you with how good he is.

  • Our parents live 5-6 hours away.  Ben has been there once but we've done the trip with Henry countless times.  We try to drive at naptime or bedtime.

We will be making the trip for Easter so I am anxious to see how it will go with Bennett this time.

  • We drove to Niagara Falls, about a 7 hour drive. She did fine. Just give yourself plenty of time to stop to eat and stretch!

  • Drive at night if possible.

  • Over spring break we drove from Chicago to Florida.  It was 2 solid days in the car and Z was amazing.  I had a bag of toys on the floor next to him so every time he seemed a little fussy I would hand him a new toy.  We did stop every 3-4 hours for nursing and stretching.

On the drive home we did 14 hours in the car one day...he would sleep, then wake up and look out the window, then play with a toy, then sleep...he was sooo good!!

Aim to get at least some of the traveling done during naptime and overnight would be preferable. Might want to slather on some rash cream just in case (I read this somewhere) .

  • Agree about timing trip for naptime/bedtime.  Diaper cream and overnight diapers cut down on irritation and leaks.  You will have to stop for a least one feeding I imagine.  Go ahead and accept that it will take 20 minutes and LO will appreciate getting out of the seat and stretching.  We are doing a 6 hour trip next wknd and hopefully it goes well.
  • Thanks everyone! We will be traveling in the middle of the day...boo :( but he does take his best naps in the afternoon. I really appreciate all the advice. I hadn't thought about doing the overnight diaper, but that's a great idea! Maybe I will get him a few new little toys to keep him interested too! Wish us luck :)
