Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Is it a good/bad idea to darken babies room for daytime naps?

I always heard it was a bad idea do this as it may cause babies to confuse their days/nights and that they needed to get used to napping during the day.  However, I've read some posts on here about people buying room darkening shades and such for their babies' naptimes in order to make the room dark.  Is there any conventional wisdom on this topic?

  • I don't darken her room because I want her to understand that daytime sleeping and nighttime sleeping are different.

  • I turn off the overhead light in his room for naps but the room is definitely brighter during the day because of the window.  At night it is completely pitch black dark

  • When DS obviously had his days and nights mixed up we didn't darken the room during the day. But now he has his longer stretch of sleep at night that tells me he is no longer mixed up on days and nights. He takes better naps when he is in a darkened room so we close the blinds for him. We haven't had a need to invest in any special shades as the sun does not shine directly onto his window.

  • Meh. We have curtains closed on DS's room at all times. But in the day, some light makes it through so it's definitely not COMPLETELY black but it's darkened a bit. I think it is fine.
