So a coworker had a baby girl when Sarah was 9 months old. I gave her three huge bags of baby clothes, most of which had never been used as we had so much for Sarah. I told her I needed them back if we ended up having another girl. I also gave her a lot of baby gear like bathtub and play mat. Today I told her we are having another girl and she said she gave away the clothes! I can't believe that now we'll have to buy more baby girl clothes although I specifically told her we needed them back. Argh...

Yeah, I can understand being annoyed ... but at the same time, that's why I only took clothes from my SIL--she was done after 2 boys. And it's the reason why I'm OK with giving away stuff--because I am done.
So while I understand being irked, I think it's hard to give things back.

Well that sucks. I guess the lesson here is that you only give to close friends or relatives, rather than a casual aquaintaince. Someone you fully trust to save things for you, etc.
I've only given clothes away to people who I know plan to have more children. That way, I know they won't get rid of anything for a while.
I know my cousin's wife has been very careful to keep our stuff separate since she knows IF we have another kid, I might want some of it back. But they also plan to have at least one more kid.. so it's not going anywhere right now.
A few other things I gave away with the knowledge that I probably won't see it again.
That sucks. I hate it when people aren't considerate - especially when you've been so generous.
If it makes you feel better, you are welcome into my tiny circle of girl clothes and other stuff. A friend is due in June so it seems likely that she will be wrapping up with things just as your LO is about to need them.
Also, is Sarah still wearing size 3 diapers? If so, I have a package of swim diapers for you. I'll email you - my Sundays are free for a while so maybe we can finally do that playdate. So pathetic - we don't even live 3 miles apart! Life with a toddler is so busy for all of us....
I didn't give anything away from my DS. Now that I have DD and finished having children-I feel comfortable giving them away. I wouldn't take clothes from people who wanted them back- I was too worried about how to keep them separate.
I am so sorry. I would be so upset if someone agreed to give me back the clothes.
Some acquaintances gave us clothes and said they wanted them back and I put special laundry stickers on them so I could keep track. It was such a pain and I was so worried about the clothes (they were really nice) that I would not borrow clothes again!

This totally. I am not giving any of Sienna's things away until I know we are done.
This is how I was, for the most part.
I have recently taken clothing (all 24 month size) from my cousin, who has a son born 7/30/08 (Aaron is 8/14/09) and he's basically a year ahead in clothing. But I'm giving it all back to her in case she has a 3rd child (also has a 6 year old girl)?and she's saving ALL her baby stuff for her younger sister (who is not pregnant, but just to do so). I asked my cousin if she'd take MY stuff too. That way I don't have to worry about what belonged to who.

That would upset me also and it was very inconsiderate of them. I am hanging onto Maddie's clothes until I know for sure we aren't having another girl.
Argh! Oh, man, I am sorry. We stashed everything instead of sharing because my family is very girl-heavy, and I knew we'd probably need the stuff back right away.
If we get the time to shop at all, maybe I'll see if I can find you guys something cute from around here. Newborn size, hot weather, or larger and cooler?
