Babies on the Brain

Going to start ttc this summer (kinda long)

My husband and I just got married in September and we are going to start TTC this summer.  In May I went for my yearly exam with my ob/gyn and my doctor diagnosed me with uterine didelphys...(tissue separating my cervix completely in half)  (shocking to me, since I have been going to an ob/gyn since I was 17 ( I am 27 now)  and she is the first doctor to tell me I have this.....(this was my first visit with her, and I am SO glad that I switched doctors and started seeing her, because I had NO idea that I had any issues at all)  She wanted me to have an ultrasound to see if the tissue was anywhere else, and the US showed that the tisse not only separated my cervix, but completely separated my uterus in half as well....She told me not to worry about TTC, but I can't help but worry!!  In all reality, getting preggo shouldn't be a problem, but staying preggo, since Uterine Didelphys can cause pre-term labor and miscarriage late into pregnancy....just curious if anyone else has been diagnosed with this?  And if your docs have told you anything different?!

  • You may want to talk with your doctor about this futher.  I have no knowledge of this, personally.  Do some research on your own and take a bunch of questions to your doc.

I would also ask if there is a surgery to correct it.  Miscarriage is so hard to go through (I had one at 9 weeks) but I can't imagine having to go through a late term miscarriage.  It would be really hard on you and your family.

  • I would see if it could be repaired.  It would be worth it to avoid a miscarriage.

Also...preggo is sauce.  Not something you can be.

  • I personally have not had any experience with didelphys.  I definitely would do more research on this and see what options are out there.  I can't begin to imagine a late term miscarriage or the terrifying experience of a pre-term labor/premie.

On another note, we use the word pregnant vs preggo.  It is just the preferred lingo here.  Good Luck on your TTC journey.

  • Sorry, haven't posted on here before, didn't mean to offend anyone with the lingo!!  There is surgery to correct it, but it isn't reccomended, as it could cause more issues with me TTC.  I was just curious if anyone else was dealing with this!
  • Also, maybe check out the High Risk Pregnancy board.  There may be some ladies on there who have gone through this.

  • I will check that board out...thanks  Smile

  • Leslie has, she had a couple m/c becuase of it.  You need to get it fixed if your baby's lifes are worth it to you.  You don't want to go through that heart break.
  • Both my doctor and the specialist she referred me to think surgery would make things harder for me to get and stay pregnant...so surgery isn't really an option for me.
  • IMHO, I'd see an RE (reproductive endocrinologist, ie: fertility specialist) to ask these questions. While your ob/gyn might be very well educated on the subject and the surgeon well-versed in the statistics behind the miscarriages, an RE would be your best bet.

They deal with fertility as it results to weird things in your body (or having them removed) every single day. RE's usually can find a "plan of attack" (for lack of a better phrase) for keeping you pregnant much better than a surgeon or ob/gyn could because that's the RE's job.

    Good luck!

  • The specialist I saw was a fertility doctor, is that different then an RE?!    The fertility doctor I saw couldn't have been more non challant  (spelling?) about the whole thing...I spent more time in his office with his nurse then I did with him!!  He didn't seem concerned with my issue at all!!!!! He was like you'll get pregnant, you'll have babies, blah blah blah...but after researching my condition online, I can't help but stress out about it  (which I know is not good to do!!)  I love my ob/gyn however and I really trust her.  I am due for my yearly exam in May, and I plan to futher discuss my concerns with her then...I was just hoping to hear some stories with happy endings!!!  Thanks for your advice!!
  • Whoa, that sounds very odd coming from an RE, then. Time for a second opinion?

I've not been to an RE yet many of the ladies here have been, and I can't imagine any of them relating a story where their RE was so nonchalant about the possibility of late term miscarriages.

Definitely check out the Trouble TTC board, and maybe SAIF (Success After Infertility)-- I'd be willing to bet that you'd find someone with a similar situation.

I thought everyone was really supportive. There was nothing unsupportive about telling her about the lingo we use on the board.

  • I have a friend who had a similar issue--she had a lot of trouble conceiving but then was able to have a healthy baby.  I agree that you should get a second opinion from an RE.

And no one was trying to be mean about pregnant vs. preggo--they were helping you avoid snark later by kindly letting you know that it's not the preferred term here.

The corrections didn't bother me, although I was kind of surprised by them, no big deal!!  Just don't want to offend anyone!!  Just hoping to meet some people who are going through the same thing!!!
