  • You can try www.ravelry.com for free and purchased patterns.  I can't help you with yarn as it still a mystery to me.

  • I'd go for worsted weight yarn that has at least 70% wool content. Often it's easier to just get 100% wool and not have to worry about the other fiber content. Different types of wool are softer or scratchier, depending on the breed of sheep.

Most yarns available at a place like AC Moore or Hobby Lobby are going to be a blend of wool breeds that should be fine for a soaker/longie pattern. If you want to spend a little more $, you can go with a guaranteed soft yarn like 100% merino.

You can get yarn anywhere from a craft store to a thrift store to your local yarn store, depending on how fancy you want to go.

The pp had a good suggestion for ravelry.com for patterns. There are some free ones there. You can also google "free knitted soaker pattern" and you should find some that way.

  • For soakers I like punk rock knitters pattern

For shoties and longies I bought the pattern picky pants from little turtle knits and I use that. It has all the different sizes and different leg finishes which I like.
